I thought the stereo remasters from '09 were fine, another trip to the well it seems.

sgt. peppers is by far the worst post-help album. only good songs are the paul ones (this is not unusual)

given that this is an "anniversary" release... hopefully white album will be next year as it came out in 68

It's like the Star Wars of the music industry

This 100%. Rev 9 is extremely enthralling.

Good call re: Star Wars. Horrible.

Aye, thats what I'm agreeing with. Add some more pew pew noises and shoop the cover to put Lucas in.

Just listened to this on 5.1 last week and can confirm it sounds fucking incredible. Probably the best remaster I've ever heard.

I was skeptical about YET ANOTHER Beatles remaster/re-mix, but color me surprised -- this one is worthwhile for sure. And Pepper's definitely not in my top 3, either. Sounds like they did something to bring out the sub frequencies in Paul's bass, made the drums more upfront and crisper, and did away with the extreme, distracting panning. Sounds clearer in general too.

Most important albums historically aren't necessarily the best. This album has grown on me over time but it's always been a haphazard album of Paul's granny music, some fun but aloof songs, and then ending with one of the best songs ever recorded.

Funny enough the only Sgt. Pepper 50th anniversary thing I payed attention to was this:

Just wanted to say that "Lovely Rita" never gets enough love in my opinion. The first 20 seconds are just transcendent.

While the remaster is nice in a lot of ways I don't know what people are talking about when they are saying it's crisp and detailed. For example, compare the 2009 Getting Better mix to the 2017 version. 2009 is much more detailed. Still haven't made my mind up about this new version.

EDIT: The new mixes are certainly more upfront but it seems that a lot of background details have been been drowned out

Definitely agreed. I remember when I was a kid I never cared much for it. But it's grown so much on me, I never hear anyone say much about it.

It also got my favorite treatment of any of the tracks on Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Dub Band, which is a pretty groovy listen if you're in the mood

I think that people think the subject matter is kind of silly and overlook how gorgeous it is on a pure sound and musical level.

Though

"Made her look a little like a military man" is either one of the unintentionally or intentionally funny lyrics I've ever heard. Not sure.

people who don't like paul and his silly music are dumb

edit: mull of kintyre is shit tho

I picked up the mono reissue of this album just a year ago, which also sounds fantastic.  Anyone been able to compare this stereo remaster to the mono reissues?

I was like that in high school and college, I'd slag Paul's stuff as a pissy dumb young adult - now I think Lennon is overrated. I've actually found myself into McCartney's solo stuff more than ever. A year or two ago in particular I was on a late night drive listening to some top40 oldies station on low volume merely to stay alert while driving through Temple-Belton, TX when Wings "Band On The Run" came on: I went into full-on dad rock mode muttering "ahhh yssss" trying not to wake the wife or kid up in the car.

Harrison is best.

I used to be like that about Paul, he's actually alright isn't he. Took me til age 32 to get.

Since being born on planet Earth I've been bored of being constantly told how great this album is. I'll swallow my Anglophile pride and say the Americans (and a Welshman) made something a whole lot (million times) better a few months before this was released, and looked a million times cooler. I find the whole Sgt Pepper thing a bit sickly, and vomit inducing tbh. Best keep my lips tightly shut, and my fingers from tapping any further

same here

my buddy was a Paul fan in college and i'd rip him on that all the time - makes sense now - he's also a musician and not just a fan so he had different perspective on it

Listened to this on a friend's table, it seemed to me Giles pretty much did a modern take and mixed most of the sounds to the center soundstage, as opposed to the extreme left and right stereo panning of the 2009 Martin & Son mixes. Am I wrong?

Of course, the vinyl packaging is lush, and I was fortunate enough to see the Beatles Love Cirque du Soleil show in Vegas last week for a fresh take, love that performance.
