How does one see a virtual band in a live setting?

I think they have a really big screen projecting them "performing" and actual musicians just kinda dotted around the stage? Quite gimmicky tbh but i mean i was really into them at some point in my life so it should be worthwhile. Maybe they have something completely different planned

haven't they used 3D projections in the past?

Plastic Beach tour was something like 30 musicians on stage at once, with a huge projection screen overhead playing visuals and guest performances, I was lucky enough to see that. Demon Days had everyone behind a curtain type screen, as seen on the live video @ The Apollo. The original album did the most "virtual" version of the band, and yeah they used holograms for a few televised performances including the one with Madonna around 2005-2006. Who knows what Damon & Jamie have planned this time round.
