This summer Tom Scholefield a.k.a. Konx-om-Pax will release the very welcome ‘Refresher’ EP, his follow up to last year’s album, the popular ‘Caramel’, which explored and disassembled the afterglow of warm rave memory.

 

The EP kicks off with the joyous actual rave of Cascada, a piece of sunny techno with a modulating, catchy stab riff over strong kicks. Next up, ‘Species with Amnesia’ starts of with hazy bells and synthetic, warped bird-like sounds, before dropping into a chugging Italo disco bassline and a relaxed synthline which snakes around the chords in unexpected ways as the track progresses.

 

The first of two remixes, the µ-Ziq mix of ‘Caramel’, is recast to maximise it’s airiness, its soft chords building into epic slabs of choral sound over loose breaks. The EP finishes on the slowly evolving dawn ambience of Huerco S.’s ‘Extended Stay – The Morning Version’ of ‘Beatrice’s Visit’, eleven pure minutes of gentle bliss to get lost in.

That art is so lovely, and I'm sure the music will be too. Still put on Caramel regularly.

That artwork is so bonkers good, I can't stop looking at it. The Caramel artwork is also stunning. 

Caramel is such a great album, I can't wait for this. I assume the Mu-ziq remix is the one played on bbc the other day.

I loved Caramel. That rave nostalgia stuff is just my thing. First three tracks on that album were a blinding tour-de-force.

Yep Tom Ravenscroft has been playing it, wicked tune.

Nice! New Huerco is also always welcome.

Sometimes, when they post one track from a release, it can be a bit underwhelming, but this one is a banger! And artwork is trippy, like the innards of a raver who drank too many glo-stiks.

Listening now. Sounds great.

Yeah, Caramel is great. I gotta say, though, the two remixes on this EP (uZiq & Huerco) are far better than the A side tracks imo.

Agreed. The new tracks are a bit weak. Remixes are very nice.

Love how the EP starts off techno and ends all drawn out and ambient. Really nice!

Damn Species With Amnesia must be one of the best tracks I've heard in 17!

The only track I don't really like on this is that Huerco S remix. I normally dig everything that dude touches.

yeah that seems like journo-garbage. anyway this was kinda boring...... liked caramel well enough, but the a-side was a little meager
