Gabber mixes at around 135bpm?

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

I'm looking to scratch a certain itch I have but I don't even know if what I'm looking for exists.

I went to some gabber parties in the NL like 15 years ago and I think the bpm was around like 135-140. Lots of solid kicks with good sounding low end. NOT squelchy noise ear murder stuff.

But everything I find on youtube is either fast af or just doesn't fit what I'm looking for.

Was I just too baked?

Timewise you went to gabber parties in the DJ Promo / The Third Movement era, when his industrial hardcore dominated the entire scene, but the way you described it sounds more like the hardstyle that was coming up in those days? Or is more The Mover type stuff?

Do you remember any venues or places you were at? Maybe that could help too.

ha, that's exactly what came first in my mind (part two fwiw www dot vimeo.com/26148934 ) or just make your own in like two seconds

grab some nice breakcore/gabba sets from artists like FFF, The Teknoist, Hellfish,Wan Bushi, (dunno about pure rubbish gabba artists) ... or whatever and repitch/resample it with any software you like. Wouldnt advise timestrechting, but that's my personal preference.

I actually regulary slow sets down with jriver media, I'm getting older I think :) this way "Constant Mutation" is almost mellow ;)

now that's an interesante melange

best in a while

I wonder what version of The Ballet it is, sounds sexy

so the guy just added tech-housish kicks to those tracks or what

sounds decent though, it works with these stabs

nah, it is mainly just playing slower, when you play the first track  at roughly -0.33 speed it sounds like in the mix (obviously using youtube settings wont work)

soulwax probably just got wasted and pitched the tracks down,  sounds like legit 90ies belgian techno shit.

Thanks for the replies. I'm going to check this stuff out and see

I'm hardly a closed minded nun. Remember, I'm on a fucking IDM forum.... an IDM forum.. Think about that for a second before claiming people are closed minded nuns.

Ivan Ooze nailed it...that's like 80bpm no? That's exactly what I had in mind. Dunno why I was thinking 135

So I want mixes full of that stuff to listen to at work. It will give my work that competitive edge

:^)

Sadly I don't really remember the venues I went to or the nights/organizers. I was with Dutch people and just kinda rode the wave

One night I remember was in Zaandam. It was kinda like a reunion night for a lot of the people that were on the original scene.

One of the girls I was with talked to a guy there for a while and she told me afterwards that part of the conversation was him riffing on the glory days of the old scene. He got very passionate about it, so she said something like, "Well, it's nice you can have this night tonight to experience the music and the vibe again" under the assumption that he was just being nostalgic and that he had moved on to less hardcore pastures. And he sheepishly said, "but, I, uh, go to gabber parties every single weekend even now..."

lol

Oh yeah, that must've been de Hemkade in Zaandam, one of THE places for gabber back in the day. Anyway, yeah, check out The Third Movement roster (loads of mixes by DJ Promo from that era). Not sure if it's your thing but Void Settler is the weirdest one coming out of that label with more breakcore influences and generally very out of place. Few more classics:

Wondering if you ever went to Industrial Shock parties in Trapman, Schagen, as my brother threw those parties :)

Looks like DJ Promo is the man. I remember one track with Full Metal Jacket samples? I was only in and around Amsterdam. If those places you mentioned are in and around Amsterdam, then that shows what I know

Ha, must've been used countless times in gabber but

I meant a DJ Promo track, but I will check that one later. My wife doesn't allow any of that in our living room, at any time

Yeah I love this mix, made me listen to gabber in a different way (akin to chopped n' screwed, slowcore, vaporwave, etc.)

I guess this comes full circle: because isn't gabber's precursor new beat, which itself was a slowed down, harder version of house music that was akin to EBM and industrial?
