Spilling liquids on drummachines

Recommended Posts

I just spilled the contents of a big cup of tea on my tr-8. It wasn't turned on and I turned it upside down asap and it is now drying in that position. Any ideas on how long I should wait to turn it on? 2 weeks?

Did the tea have sugar or milk in it?

No milk or sugar. It does have orange peel in it so that might contain some sugar.

I ask as the sugar can cause problems. I did this to a drum machine once. Best thing to do is remove the cover and submerge in water with washing up liquid in. Then rinse in water and leave to dry somewhere quite warm like an airing cupboard for several days.

If you connect it to the power supply and turn it on the electricity will dry it out almost immediately, and any damaged circuitry will reconnect, this works for anything with water damage. Except furniture and books.

Some songs I made with my fingers and electronics. In the process of making some more. Hopefully.

Take it apart, clean it up with some water and a soft brush, like an old toothbrush.  I most likely wouldn't submerge it, depending.... Rinse with distilled water and let it air dry for a few days.

Put it in a sealed bag rice or silica crystals (kitty litter)

This is a good idea, rice will absorb all the humidity and it should be good to go after 1-2 days wait.

I wouldn't submerge or wash anything before any batteries are removed from the board - if there's any persistent internal memory (like presets) on the thing, it means there will be batteries too.

earl grey or green tea ?

Herbal

That's probably a good thing since regular tea is slightly acidic. No idea if it's enough to eat away at the copper in the long run but better safe than sorry. In college I spelled some plain seltzer, just carbonated water with nothing else in it, on a trackball and dried it out and it was fine for another year and a half but when it failed I opened it up and even though I dried it the carbonic or carbolic (I forget which it is) acid from the carbonation had slowly eten away the traces on the board where it had gotten in.

I would guess that the biggest worry with herbal tea is that some of it got inside pots or switches and whatever residue it leaves behind will make them sticky or scratchy, but they can be cleaned.

I learned how to do a really deep fader cleaning (not quite to the "open the fader and hand clean the boards" level but jsut shy of that) last fall and basically what you need to really get them as clear as you can without opening them up is

-Give the control a good blast of compressed air to clear ut any dust or large particles that are in it

-spray in contact cleaner (the kind with no lubrication, that you aren't supposed to use in pots and faders because it cleans out the oil in them and makes them wear faster, as opposed to control cleaner with lubrication - the idea here is to clean out the old oil in case it has stuff stuck in it)

-Give it another good blast of compressed air to clear out all of the old oil that the contact cleaner has loosened up.

-let it dry (I usually move on to the next one and get all of them up to this point before I move on)

-Manually lubricate it (I use Deoxit Fader Lube or Deoxit Fader Grease depending on the fader) and exercise it.

I did that routine to every fader on the Juno I got at a low price last year because some of the faders weren't working at all (not scratchy, completely dead - no change at all across their whole range), and it got every one of them to come back completely, not quite like new but pretty close.  You might need to do it a few times and it's a bit harder with pots because you have to open the case up to reach them, but it works well.

It actually works pretty well for hardcovers.

Should make your beats sound more liquid.

Best way to clean a laptop is submerge in soapy water and let air dry on your flat's balcony, preferably in the sun.

Definitely gonna try my hand at some liquid drum and bass asap.

I spill the liquid on the drum-drum-drum machine.

Spilling Liquids on Drummachines - most IDM 2018?

2017 more like, but I doubt there'll be a comp this year, seeing as the 2016 one had a pretty rough birth.

Some songs I made with my fingers and electronics. In the process of making some more. Hopefully.

Do you have a truck or large tractor? If you lay the drum machine on concrete and very very slowly drive over it with a lot of weight it will squeeze out any liquids that got into it. Works 100% guaranteed.

yep, then just hit with sticks to make sound, works everytime.
