What cable to use to get the sound from my ancient keyboard to my laptop?

Recommended Posts

Hi, I know fuck all about the hardware side of music but I need to record some melodies from my keyboard. It's a Technics KN1500 and the line out specifications in the manual are stated as output level 1.5 vrms and there are two, one R/R+L and the other L. What will I need? If I need to provide more details do let me know. Any help would be massively appreciated.

"They're about guns, lasers, robots with laser guns in space. Monsters from the future. Explosions. Sylvester Stallone doing a backflip on top of a spike while Robocop carries a ghost up a mountain. Bombs and swords and that... IDM is awesome."

to connect into your technics outputs you'll need 2 unbalanced 1/4 TRS if you wanna record stereo or just 1 in the Right (R+L = MONO) channel if you wanna record mono... on the other side of the cable/cables it depends on the type of input connections of your laptop audio interface... which is?

Cool thanks, well I have a mic input if that's what you mean? Sorry, I'm fucking clueless.

you mean you don't have an external audio interface? if so, i believe that you have a line in besides the mic in right? btw we're talking hardware not software, are you taking the piss??? don't get me wrong but someone who says he knows fuck all about the hardware side of music surely must know something about audio connections like trs jacks and xlr...

Why? Up until this point I've only ever used my keyboard for playing 80's synth pop on, I'm not taking the piss but thanks for the help.

you should purchase a usb audio interface

My concern is that my keyboard is old, it has a floppy disk drive on it, but I'll give this a look, cheers.

The USB interface will just allow you to record sounds from your keyboard with a higher quality than the mic input. As long as the connection is analog and the usual audio jacks it will work, as that technology has been around for like 100 years now.

yeah the audio interface is exactly what it says on the tin - an interface to allow you to easily route audio into your mac. so the interface plugs into your mac via usb and you plug the audio out from your keyboard into the audio ins on the interface. the interface converts the analogue audio singal from the keyboard to digital and sends this data into your mac via usb.

what DAW are you using? doesn’t matter, just curious how you will be mixing and editing.

Audacity looks like it'll do the job but if you could recommend anything better that would be smashing. I use to have FL Studio with Goldwave but wanted to learn the keyboard and got sucked into that for awhile and lost what little knowledge I had. Hardware is definitely more fun than messing about with notes on your screen.
