Cell (from WATMM V1 comp cd)

Hi all!

I've been a lurker for nearly twenty years and finally decided to register and post!

I was listening to some old music I had downloaded back in 1999 from that era's incarnation of MP3.com (for those who don't remember, it was a lot like souncloud) and I thought I would finally solve my personal mystery of who Cell is and if he or she is still making music. I was too broke to buy the CDs when they were available, and for the past few years I've been chasing a purple dragon trying to find them. Also, I have no clue what the person's real name is or if he/she switched to another alias. There's a guy named Alexandre Scheffer who also goes by Cell, and although his active years make sense as per it possibly being him, there's no proof of it (that I've found) and the music sounds drastically different. I figured since the Cell is question has a track called Tarantula Brush (and a bonus track, Tell) on the WATMM Vol 1 Compilation CD, maybe someone can help me out with who this person is, if he/she is still active, and if anyone has those MP3.com CDs.

I remember Cell. He was very talented when most of us were wet behind the years still. Yeah he's a big mystery guy that another musician friend was trying to scout. I went looking for him on behalf of another artist but mostly everyone here that talked to him has either left decades ago or have been banned. I think od++ had contact with him around that era. He was on some label that artists like Enduser were on that released a couple of idm compilations and had a 'restart' with the roster when he couldn't be found. I can't remember off the top of my head what it was called.

I was 60% sure that it was Alexandre Scheffer too but there are like 4 cell's out there on discogs so who knows.

edit: also you have any of his tracks or cd's you can upload? I wouldn't mind getting a hold of 'em.

I don't have any of the physical CDs, unfortunately. Still trying to track them down but there may be none in actual existence at this point. I have a folder of miscellaneous tracks that I downloaded back in '99 and that's it. I'll upload them to my Dropbox and PM you a link later on tonight.

I may even be so bold as to attempt contact with Mr. Scheffer and flat out ask him.

Wasn't he related to Yann_G...i.e. LFO mix on the lated Touched comp?  I also remember him on the Ninja forum about 15+ years ago...

Woah Cell.. that's a name I haven't heard in a while. Didn't he do some stuff under the name "plaxmol" as well? I can't find any of that anywhere, all I get is results relating to the movie Flubber lol.

Might be worth getting on the TEFOSAV Facebook group and asking there, you never know!

TEFOSAV! That was the name of the label he was on.

It would be pretty awesome if he was still composing all these years. I hope the guy resurfaces at some point.

i have his 3 submissions for watmm compilation but apart from that and the fact that he used to post on ylc i don't have anymore info about the guy...

I have it on the word of a former roommate of his that if this guy doesn't want to be tracked down, which is more likely than not, then good luck finding him.

I remember his tunes from the mp3.com days, I also remember him submitting to a few remix/track competitions under the alias "plaxmol". I might still have these tracks on a HD or CDR somewhere but I'm not sure. Don't have any other info : /

"Tell" was my favourite track from the WATMM Volume One compilation (although it was an exclusive 3" CDR bonus track).

We really gotta do a Volume 2 one of these days...

Yeah Joyrex, why don't you do another WATMM comp CD? It'd be a hell of a lot easier to do it now than it was 13 years ago. lol Get on that.

UPDATE!!!

I finally tracked down someone on Discogs who has all of Cell's stuff! He didn't have any information as far as who he is or what happened to him, but I have all the music now at least.

Nice! Details? Care to post a list of all the tunes? Curious how much I have…

it's nice enough but I was expecting something really weird, whatever people can do what they want, but when internet archaeology stuff like this happens elsewhere I usually expect something sufficiently whacked out, lol. But that's just the types I associate with I guess

I got all five albums plus two more tracks I didn't know about from a "Grayscale Compilation". There are also three songs that I have from back then by "sel", which I'm 99% sure is him experimenting a bit (due to it sounding like him and also sharing album art, not that I have any of it now), as well as a few odd tracks he had posted that weren't on the albums. Still having no luck finding any of the "Plaxmol" stuff, though.
