Records and stylus wear question

Recommended Posts

I bought a record back in the day and the hole in the middle wasn't large enough so i took a pair of scissors, put the point in the middle, and spun it a bit making a better hole

It plays now but every time i listen I'm worried I'm going to wreck my stylus.

My worry is that the stylus might be getting bent out of shape...

Or maybe if the record wasn't balanced the stylus would just jump off the groove

What do you think?

Not an expert on vinyl stuff, but if I think real hard about it, isn't the stylus mechanism already built so that it follows the groove pretty well? It seems you are worried about the hole being off center a bit, but I figure that since the stylus can already follow the spiral movement of the groove outwards to the edge of the disc, then it should already be "flexible" enough to also deal with any issues about the hole being off center.

I mean, the stylus already moves around the whole surface area and follows the groove anyways, so mechanically it should allow a bit of play anyways for the whole system to work.

should be fine, had pennies on the end of a stylus or two down through the years for cmparable reasons & no real knock-on effect
