no, they never were idm to begin with since the album ended up being about deep sea creatures

Before we can have this discussion we must have the uncomfortable discussion asking "If idm is still idm". It's 2019 and idm's own beard is starting to turn grey. And according to some it's had a great old Santa Claus beard since the early 2000s.

It is sometimes. You just have to specifically look for tracks that capture that "underlying conceptual simplicity of the early IDM" feeling. Meaning simple, unpretentious tracks with just a few elements, some airy melody on top and a few clicks here and there. Otherwise I feel like music is so eclectic nowadays that it just falls under the "electronic" category. If anyone asks I just say I listen to "electronic music". For some reason glitchy drums + an abstract melody on top + a bit of acid here and there have such a strong connotational and denotational reference to the IDM / Braindance tag. How did we come to this... Is there a different way to call it?

I was trying to be silly but you make a good point.

A staple of IDM for sure is that simplicity you're talking about. Though IDM is one of the most... confusing labels and holds one of the widest range of different kinds of music or a small range depending on what you think of as idm. I'm a large range idm kinda person.

For me, at the ends of the 'idm' scale you get music that in no way resembles each other. Under it's umbrella you can stick a ton of music. Braindance fits under there. Various kinds of more 'experimental' ambient music fits under there. Acid music fits under there. Not all of each of these types cept Braindance 100% fits under the umbrella for me, but does so in a venn diagram kinda way depending on the style of the tracks.

Though with most examples you'd maybe label it as "ambient/idm" "acid/idm". Whereas Autechre is just... "idm" most of the time. Though you could drop the label entirely and just call Autechre 'experimental electronic' for many of their newer albums especially, which may become IDM in retrospect, but not right now.

TL;DR It's a weird pliable genre label

add Long hair

I'm able to FEEL the music

through my hairs

like a cat

I haven't cut or trimmed my beard since May 21, 2016

my hair hasn't been cut or trimmed since June 26, 2012

It makes my

braindance

: )

I shaved away my beard last year but then people, by which I mean ze ladies mostly, started to complain that I look better with beard so now I have it again. I don't really care one way or other.

Edit: I originally grew the beard because people at work complained that they don't recognize I'm a software engineer because I don't have a beard. The hardware engineers in the organization were usually clean shaven and software guys had beard.  (I'm only half-joking)

Same exact thing happened to me last June too! Turns out I have a weak chin and some neck fat and look like a chicken from the side. My wife was quick to encourage me to grow it back.
