I think what he's basically saying is that in order to make things interesting, they need to be surprising. Breaking up an assumed automated way of thinking, etc, makes things surprising and far more interesting. I agree with that sentiment, but I think it's myopic to assume that what we currently have (or did in 1982...assuming the quote is from then) is all we'll have and won't be surprised by anything new.
