Zephyr_Nova
It's dawned on me for the past while that most of the bands I listen to regularly have their roots in the 90's/early 00's. I'm really unaware when it comes to bands who are making interesting music post-2010 who weren't already doing that in the decades prior... metal bands aside (thank you, metal thread). So if you guys could help fill me in a bit on that front, it would be greatly appreciated. I'm sure there are many here in the same boat as me. Aside from bands in my own area, all that springs to mind is Unknown Mortal Orchestra and that King Gizzard band, both of whom started releasing stuff in 2010, and UMO had a pretty extensive music career before that (albeit a relatively unknown one... I see what I did there). This is a bit of a crisis. The term "band" here is pretty broad... I guess groups of musicians collaborating to make song-oriented music as opposed to "tracks", with a greater emphasis on playing instruments than programming (some still have programming aspects, granted). And I'd still consider post-rock shit without vocals to be on the band spectrum... Let's just be reasonable here. You know what I'm talking about watmm. That KG&LW tune reminds me a lot of Max Tundra, vocal melody/treatment/delivery especially. Zephyr_Nova
Yeah, I only just got turned onto them and checked out their latest 2 albums, which couldn't have been much different from each other. Very excited to heaer everything else they've done. That Stu MacKenzie dude is ridiculously good, music/lyric/production-wise. Goddamn machine, er, wizard. Ah yeah, that's the other thing - the more recent bands I know of that are blowing my mind seem to be extensions of studio-projects from some mastermind musician. Though I guess this has often been the case in the past too... Zephyr_Nova
Fucking rad man - definitely up my alley. It's sort of carrying the torch from bands like Hella and Lightening Bolt. I’m very curious about discovering some good stuff that the cool kids are listening to, these days. I saw a Ty Segall show recently that blew my mind. He played a lot of stuff from his new record (first taste) but, honestly, I haven’t heard much in the way of recordings from him that really knock me out. Maybe check out his live LP (I can’t remember what its called... something “lobes”) from last year... if you aren’t able to catch him live, which I highly recommend checking out, if you can. Also, my buddy played me some stuff that I dug from this dude recently... Nil
I saw Ty Segall being mentioned, he's good. Way too productive like King Gizzard, but pretty good and consistent. I hear you regarding "recent" bands, I'm always looking for some new, nice, guitar-infused stuff... yet it seems hard to find something pleasing to my ears. Anyway, in the last decade, I've genuinely enjoyed that record by Pinkshinyultrablast : - But the band / record I've been listening too compulsively / repeatedly for the last few years (ever since I've heard them really) is True Widow (here's a playlist with their last LP, which is pretty amazing BTW) : ... which sounds like the perfect blend between shoegaze and stoner rock to my ears. Huge fan of the music AND the production. Circumambulation is another amazing LP. - Finally, quite a special one to my ears. More of a psychedelic vibe then the previous suggestions, and basically a desert island record by Orval Carlos Sibelius, Super Forma. Hopefully, its first single should be a convincing incentive to listen to the whole thing : The perfect pop song, right ? The whole record is fucking lush and dense, incredibly intricate, often weird and ever unpredictable. Add any superlative you like, I guess it's one of my very favorite record ever. - I suppose Thee Oh Sees don't qualify here ? Not a huge fan of all their records, but I've always LOVED the whole Floating Coffin LP. Toe Cutter/Thumb Buster especially, what an awesome tune : Edited September 4, 2019 by Nil Zephyr_Nova and fringerviv 2 Thanks Haha Confused Sad Facepalm Burger Farnsworth Big Brain Like × Quote Hide Nil's signature Hide all signatures Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/97591-recommend-excellent-bands-on-this-side-of-2010/#findComment-2740418 Share on other sites

Secret Chiefs 3, Stereolab and Broadcast come to mind - all bands very high up on my favourite music list. It's kind or rare, I guess because you need someone in the band who's also a gifted arranger/thinks like a composer beyond being a songwriter. Wish I heard more bands do that. It's far more common for bands to jam on riffs/grooves/support a song. Always refreshing to hear a thought out arrangement. Thanks all for participating - I'll try to check out most of what's posted (only clicked on a few links so far). Embers
HTRK makes some excellent hazy post-rock / electronica stuff. From wiki: Originating in Melbourne, Australia and based in London, England since 2007, HTRK (pronounced Hate Rock) started playing in November 2003 when guitarist Nigel Yang and bassist Sean Stewart invited vocalist Jonnine Standish to create music inspired by the surrealistic films of David Lynch, along with protopunk and post-industrial ideas. Using a very slow 808 drum machine, minimal bass grooves and highly textured noise, their attitude clashed with the "rock and roll" status quo in Australia. Kennylogg Bubblebath
UMO are dope but you already got that covered. Preoccupations released two outstanding post-punky albums definitely worth checking out (and one average post-punk album) (Sandy) Alex G is absolutely nailing the indie rock/weird Americana vibe. His last few albums have been fantastic. Drab Majesty are doing some wicked synthpop/darkwave throwback stuff. Chorus drenched guitar leads and everything drowning in reverb, lovely. As far as 'new bands' go, these are the first that spring to mind. sidewinder
I'll echo several of the recommendations already posted: Ty Segall (although he released a couple of great LPs before 2010 also), King Gizzard (they've exhausted me but have definitely put out some great stuff), Thee Oh Sees (I'm a fan of 2011+ material), True Widow, Girl Band, Black Midi, Preoccupations (fka Viet Cong), and (Sandy) Alex G although he's a bit hit or miss for me. Here are a few favorite cuts from those. Other recos below. I'll also recommend the following: Total Control, Parquet Courts, White Fence, Acid Baby Jesus, Bambara, Institute, Iceage, Suuns, and DIIV.
