USB audio interface+pc+turntable->active speakers

Recommended Posts

So my question is the following, this is hypothetical as I have not yet acquired any gear. I want to be able to have my PC and my turntable connected to one source that can pipe both to active speakers. Is there an USB audio interface that can handle the sound from my PC and also take a connection from a turntable (pre-amp if necessary in between the TT and audio interface)?

i don't know anything about this brand. but there's things like it out there that are DJ mixers w/USB and phono preamps etc all in one mixer.

you could also get a more standard DJ mixer w/phono preamps and then get a separate 2 or more channel USB audio interface. Unless your turntable has line outs you'll need a phono preamp in the chain somewhere.

you can get decent phono preamps for not much or a decent DJ mixer for not much and then spend $200 more or  less on a 2 channel USB audio interface.

I am  basically looking to minimize the amount of boxes needed, so was thinking that the USB audio interface would be the one box needed. It should be able to take input from a TT and the PC. Or is this gonna need som ekind of A/B thing in between. That thing whosebrain posted seems to fit the bill but seems to be 2nd hand and a bit more than I was looking to spend.

Does the turntable output phono or line levels? Either way there's plenty of audio interfaces designed for the use case, just depends whether you need an RIAA preamp. If you really don't want a mixer you should be able to plug its outs right into your monitors/speakers.

You will need a dac with a built in phono stage if you want one box. This setup allows for vinyl ripping, but you sacrifice the analog signal path.

Sorry, this forum does not provide tech support for members of the Cthulhu mythos family with a documented history of their weird and strange evil plans.

However, assuming that I am guaranteed a good spot in the dark astral demonic hierarchies, I can say that it's a good idea to get a phono pre-amp box which will boost the turntable signal to line level (something like https://www.thomann.de/intl/behringer_pp400.htm) and any audio interface which you can use to input line level signals. The reason is that interfaces with special phono preamps are probably really rare so you end up paying a premium for the luxury of having all things (preamp + audio interface) in one box and it's probably not worth it.

It sounds like you want a small stereo mixer, unless I'm misunderstanding. There's lots of choices.

Seems like the easiest way to connect 2 sources to a set of active speakers. Get the nicest, most simple mixer that your budget allows, and you’re set. Just make sure the mixer has a phono input.

I solved this with turntable->preamp->cheap passive monitor controller->active speakers

audio interface-> monitor controller-> active speakers

ok, not the least number of boxes option but it maintains an analog signal path for the turntable and I can just reroute into audio interface if I need to record vinyl.  One switch between sources and big volume knob and mono switch.

This is the one I have:

This is a much cheaper option:

Edit: for clarity both sources going into the same monitor controller.

something like that would possibly be an option if you only want a single box.
