I remember the first time I listened to this, vividly. The buildup, the payoff with the melody. The languid shuffle of the beat, the slowness of structure, like wading through a thicket of memories, all of them clinging to you like burrs, and the melodic phrase brushing them off and letting you know that it's going to be OK. For now.

The sublimity of the melodic phrase starting at 4 minutes just does my head in. It's so naive it hurts, but oh it's good.

I'm making a playlist of sad songs, and the opening track off that album was the first that came to mind.  Ironically it's also the happiest sounding song on the playlist, but the lyrics + aftermath make it sad as fuck.

Elliott Smith's final posthumous album had a few tracks that were especially grim for similar reasons.  This one is perhaps the most disturbing combo of cheerful meets hopeless I've heard:

Peculiar thread. Jesus Christ I had to be escorted by my dad from the theatre when he took me to see E.T. because I’d turned into such a dribbling, crying mess. I remember instinctively the people in the cinema all laughing, not at me but discreetly at my dad, pretty sure he found it hilarious as well. I easily well up. I remember I paid for tickets for my mum and sister to see War Horse at the London theatre, and when asking them about the story I started welling up about that. They both laughed and said don’t go see it Steve because you won’t be able to hack it. Too much emotion turmoil. Especially with noble animals. Can’t imagine crying to Autechre though. Different horses for different courses (pun intended)

Wait you guys can cry? Don't we all have crippled mental health here?

So many things. Depending on mood, it can happen at most any time. Recently, the sentimental bits from "The Batman" pulled the heartstrings a couple of times.
