If anyone's interested here's Hecker's PHD thesis on loud sounds: https://www.are.na/block/21331892

Oh well that explains that one time I saw him at a festival and it was way too loud for me to enjoy lol.

Don't overlook Radio Amor btw if we're doing album recs.

i went to see him and lopatin at the RFH about ten years ago. they had a massive room and a tiny PA. sounded so distant and weedy. almost walked. still baffled as to why i didn't. the performance felt like it was mimed, as it so clearly felt like it was just the album they did from start to finish.

I've listened to this a lot since release day. I like his work, especially Radio Amor and Ravedeath, though I've not listened to Love Streams or Konoyo a great deal. No Highs feels like another highlight.

I really like Colin Stetson's contributions on this, would like to hear a collaboration proper...

Wait .... why did he think this was a good look, why does he think he helped popularise Ambient Music ... I have so many questions

I think that No Highs is kind of "biosonical" album, obvious by the title tracks suchs as "Total Garbage" and "Anxiety" living in this Clown World, hence that outfit (why should it matter). And yes, he definitely made it a bit more popular. Not saying this because of you, but either you love or hate Tim it seems.

I am really susceptible to saxophone textures and Colin Stetson's contribution is amazing on this. I don't know how much Tim may have quantized or chopped the original take but if Colin is doing "Monotony II" live, I've never heard anything like that in a sax. The criticism at the first of the thread is valid in a way because this is by far the most Hecker has sounded like other people. "Sense Suppression" and the intro for Floating Points - "Environments" share a vibe and "Living Spa Water" is a less foreboding take on Jochem Paap - "MRG-RVX". It's a great album though. There's nothing wrong with tropes if the execution is good and I keep coming back to listen this one.

when through bitter life experience and bad trips you gradually develop a scaly crust of cynicism, a hair-trigger of insanity and paranoia, a burden of crushed dreams - then and only then, will you be a true wattmer.

idk man, i think it's been years since the heckman has done something really good. to me his work has become a lot more sterile over time, just kind of...bland.

an example of this from the newest album is "winter cop." just comes across as really flat, bloodless, generic. something that came to mind while i listened is BOC's "sundown." obviously similar basic deal - some cool cords with big verb. the boc track is so evocative, it draws you in, envelopes you. the chord choices are very cool and provoke unique emotional contours. the synth patch is so well done.

in contrast the hecker just...sits there. it feels superficial, does not go beyond. it feels like soundtrack music, but not in a good way.

Is this the right thread to tell you about the time Tim Hecker sent a mean email to a friend who had named his cat Tim Hecker?

Mean as in 'cruel' or 'mighty' - Either way, sure !

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.

There sadly isn't much more to this little story (or maybe I've forgotten the saltier bits since): Tim Hecker (the human) essentially sent a cease-and-desist to the owner of Tim Hecker (the cat) to stop using his name. Tim Hecker (the cat) was pretty chill about it.

I don't believe this would've been an issue if the cat was named Florian Hecker.

I'm really hoping this was a joke by Tim Hecker (the human) or my respect for him has plummeted even further

Just discovered this and i'm really enjoying it. Prompted me to dive back into his discography which has been and still is hit or miss with me. I can see how someone thinks this sounds too cinematic, but I'm loving it. Prompted me to order tickets for a show of his in a few weeks. Really looking forward to it, first time going to a show solo which should be cool.

Also decided to check out Infinity Pool that he scored. It has pretty mixed reviews but I actually thought it was pretty great. Maybe cause I never watch movies anymore, but kept me interested the whole time and felt like a relatively fresh idea, plot-wise. Still haven't got all of his releases, especially the last few. But usually takes me a few listens to digest an album that works best as a whole.

Monotony I & II are really emotional, especially with recent feelings of grief I've been dealing with.

Lol the cat story. Was the cat like famous and had an Instagram account or how the heck did Heckman notice? Also this LP is pretty ace like most of Tim's output.
