Incunabula vs Amber

Recommended Posts

I wouldn't be able to rank from confield onwards, i.e. since, as I see it, they achieved that thing which is Autechre and nothing else... I can instead scale the previous things, and, generally, my liking follows the chronological progression (except for 3repetae which, although according to them, is the starting point for an approach free from other influences - they talked about it in an interview -, I find it discontinuous, and on some occasions it doesn't catch me ). What continues to surprise me is the fact that, instead, the approval goes in reverse: you would expect this in a generic electronics forum, but in the Autechre forum it is unexpected to see how the aspects of when Autechre were less Autechre prevail

I haven't written the word Autechre enough. Autechre.

Amber has Montreal, Piezo, Glitch, Nine, Further, Yulquen and Nil.  Incunabula has Kalpol Introl, Bike, Eggshell, Doctrine and 444. All quite good tracks. I don't listen to much else from either album anymore. Amber wins by a thin margin but overall they're both at the bottom of the list

My favorite is Amber. Inkoonaboola sounds a bit too much like Aphex Twin xD (444). Both albums cut from the same cloth really and kind of stand side by side because of it. Siblings born in the times of yore by a youthful 'chre. Amber never really ventures into choppier territory than its predecessor, but maybe refines and builds upon it like Evil Dead into Evil Dead II.

Also, is the album cover of Incunabula actually a distorted image of the Amber cover? Cause that kind of fits with the rough n' raw vs. lush n' shiny deal.

back in the day i started with Incunabula, followed a few weeks later by Amber and Confield. i remember liking the tracks on Incunabula a lot, some of them were genuinely good but some were interesting in a novel/unfamiliar way. these days i would say Incunabula has some unlikeable tracks - i wouldn't go back to Autriche or Lowride. Maetl is ok but mainly just noisy. Doctrine goes on too long for what it is.

i don't have these complaints about Amber, which i'd still be ready to listen to from start to finish. Piezo and Teartear are some of my favourite Ae tracks. overall there are weak moments but everything on the album is good stuff.

so i'd say Amber.

You might be thinking of the Garbage EP

  • 1 year later...

The more you know .... (anyone know what the significance of the specific year 1501 was ?)

Think it's the first time I've ever heard it pronounced - For me i've always said: In-queue-na-bueller

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.

The English pronunciation sounds absolutely horrible, incunabula is a Latin plural of incunabulum, the anglicized version is incunable. I prefer to pronounce Incunabula properly. 1501 because after that book-printing as an industry was overtaken by the printing presses, and other methods dwindled. Amber has a fascinating etymology (elektron 👉electricity) as well.

You are in a maze of twisty little passages, all alike.

there's a good chance amber is my most listened to album of all time.  But Incunabula has a couple of my favorite songs.

Tri Repetae is when they started to just sound like Autechre instead of sounding like The Early 90's. So with that in mind, I greatly prefer Incunabula because it's a lot more fun. Amber is too cheesy

Nott truu! It started with Incunabula! If you can’t tell the difference between Incunabula and eurodance, RTFM!

By 'English' to you mean the version in the video (In-ca Nab-ula) or my 'English' way (and what sounds very close to @zero 's way) of saying it (In-queue-na bueller) ?

I've always thought of it as In-queue-na-bueller as well but I think I've heard that other pronunciation...

I think I listen to Incunabula more often than Amber. I tend to skip tracks on both, which I don't  often do on other Autechre albums (apart from the recent mammoths).

I find Incunabula ties in better with the electro sound that they still often reference, and I really got into Kraftwerk and some other old synth music and electro funk a few years ago so that's made me like Incunabula a bit more.

Amber has its moments, but it also has Silverside which sounds completely out of place and kind of ruins the Foil/Montreal mood.

For that alone : Incunabula > Amber
