thanks for sharing your harrowing experience with the group. that must have been difficult. if you're still feeling the need to explore your feelings further next time, be sure to bring it up then. this is always a safe space.

who else has had difficulty in grappling with a changing world around them and was left marked from it like the brave exitonly was? would you like to share? please hold up your hand, don't be shy.

sorry, what?

ngl I'm at copacetic with Benn the YT "personality," seems to suit him better than just being the flahblub. And if he wants to talk capitalism then good for him, don't watch if you don't want to.

i’m definitely not trying to say what he should  or shouldn’t be posting. just giving my opinion on a topic in a discussion board. i guess this was a controversial take but im sticking with it. i’d listen to his expertise on music production but as far as an in depth explanation of the current geopolitical circumstances, i would prefer to listen to someone with more of a background in that area. sorry! i just think its weird when someone starts a channel about something they are good at and then decides they are a universal guru or maybe they get the idea that they need to go influence their “followers” or something.

but yeah, he can make videos about whatever he wants. i can give my opinion in a forum. that’s how free speech should work. gotta say i’m a little surprised by @auxien‘s reaction but hey that’s part of the deal as well

^in reference to @exitonly:

lol no one is trying to take away your right to freeze peach. it's not a controversial take, it was a pretty bland and admittedly ignorant one tho.

"stupid musicians talking about things that aren't music, shut the fuck up, no one cares what you think about anything else." i mean...okay? weird if you actually truly believe something like that (yes, you didn't say that exactly, i'm exaggerating for effect), but okay.

yeah i hear some of his noodling and stuff in videos and it can be good at times, i think his straight simply compositional piano type stuff is more interesting than most of the other, but i've never listened to any of his music, like, ever. not my kinda thing.

yeah it was a pretty measured and reasoned video. it's sorta 'predicting the future' somewhat (not really) which is always a setup for being 'wrong' eventually, but he wasn't presenting like that and made some effort to make that clear; instead was just laying out some well-researched facts and trying to sorta go 'well, you see how this probably doesn't lead down a good path?' - title's a bit clickbait tho, gotta feed that algorithm.

hmm.. i haven't gotten the 'guru' vibe at all.. he's just a guy following his whims. i find it refreshing. he's good at writing scripts for good flow. i think it's the ADHD or whatever. he's upfront all the time about his level of education and who he is etc.. not pretending to be a physicist or something.  i duck out of some of his videos because they're less interesting or whatever.. but there's a bunch, like the shit about spotify, that are solid.  he's pretty good at distilling research/topics etc. and communicating in layman's terms.  his capitalism video is pretty good. touches on a lot of issues... is sort of a rehash of history in very broad strokes coupled with some of the venture capital stuff. there's some longer form videos out there that really get into it.. and some people do it constantly from different angles as its their whole thing.. whole reason for their channel etc..

i think Benn Jordan doing a "look at capitalism and how fucked up it is right now" will poke the algorithm for some people.

this all sounds like fair and good points. the guru thing is/was definitely an assumption but just something i’m wary of from other ‘influencers’ suddenly pivoting into more serious territory

please point out the where and how i've attacked you.

neither of these things represents productive discourse. Me saying I would rather learn more about complex topics like late stage capitalism from people who have invested substantial amounts of time researching the subject is not an ignorant statement. I don’t even understand what that first bit about me being “brave” even means.

you saying 'i haven't even watched this guy's video but i assume it's like this other bs...' is admitting ignorance of the video's contents. that's all i was referring to.

that whole bit was a send up at your bit about some video game streamer playing Diablo and getting into arguments and then you watching him do alt-right content? it was an out-of-left-field bit meant to poke at how out-of-left-field your whole thing was, with some digging at you about recounting the whole thing that seemed quite random and suggestive of 'he's an influencer, oh well he's about to start posting alt right shit or something else wild', because that was the example you gave. i guess you honestly thought he was one of those influencer types in general tho? my mistake i guess. reading your post again i can see why i thought that tho.

and at this point we're in that imagined Mr Show sketch (rebuttals to rebuttals to explanations to explanations).

fair, i'd argue your first one falls into that as well tho. and exactly 1% of the time i've spent on this site has been productive discourse, so uh, par for the course really?

yeah i didn’t mean to suggest flashbulb was alt-right. and yeah i could watch the video, or i could go read a well researched book on late stage capitalism. only one of those two things would really alleviate my ignorance of the subject.

I think what makes him different is his channel is a not for profit. Funded by Patreon. No ads. So, the whole thing comes cross as more sincere since it’s not ad driven.  Just my take but it does change things for me when there’s no ads.
