Actress - Statik (LP)

Yeah it sounds to me like a bunch of tracks that weren't strong enough to make the cut for his last few albums. Lots of piano and fm synthesis all over it.  I'm glad theyre officially out there tho, something else to listen to if youre in the mood for some late period Actress.

ok i think i love this more than Statik which i already loved. imo it seems like he saves his best stuff for mixes lately, that 88 in romen numerals series of mixes for NTS was absolutely spellbinding

Yeah his mixes are awesome, as much as I love his albums this mix & the NTS sessions are as good (or maybe even better.)

Love how proflic he's been recently while mataining the quality.

Statik gets better every time i listen to it. such a weird dark corner he’s exploring on it, growing on me more and more and more like a fungus seeping into my skin

enjoyed the mix more than statik tbh. 

still completely mystified by this artist after all these years. hasn't been a huge amount of artistic "growth" as we usually describe it, but there has been whole lot of vague, obtuse words, images and posturing. maybe that's the point? it's all hazy and undefined. Maybe people make actress into what they want it to be. It certainly seems like the press has tried to force him into a thing that could be easily understood, and he keeps trying to dodge that by.... making sort of the same thing he's always made. At least since Ghettoville which felt like the beginning of the end for me. Wild how many releases with nice vinyls, artworks, editions this level of music gets put out, when so many people with so much talent are resigned to bandcamp and maybe a 500 vinyl run that gets delayed for months and has pressing issues. He's gotta be privately funded or extremely well-connected or both. Anyone have any other thoughts? and don't just say "idk man, it's just choons" 

I mean I get what your saying but you could say the same about anyone relatively successful who you personally aren't that keen on. In all the Arts always an element of luck/chance to who does well & who doesn't.

That being said I think Actress does very much deserve it. He's maybe not shown all that much growth & to people not into him he's not doing anything that new or special I guess...but his music makes me feel a certain way that no-one else' quite does, it hits a liminal, dream like, ASMR type vibe I just love.

Or idk it's just good choons innit  might be a better response to be honest but thought I would have a go at answering you question but if you don't get it you don't get it...& that's fine 2.

It's not for everyone and that's fine. I don't need every artist to reinvent itself every two years. He has a nice niche corner of the electronic music market covered and he does it like no one else. Entering the music scene at the right time, signing to the right labels etc. has helped him get to the level of popularity he is now. He has nice vinyls etc. because people like his music and buy it for that reason, it's not an industry plant or private funding situation. 

I do think the """"luxury sonics"""" thing he had going for his last NT album was cringey and pretentious but other than that, he does what he does and he does it well.

Literally listening to it now. Half way through - It's not long, one track that clocks in at 20m41s - pretty cool.

Seems he's going down the sketchy longform composition burial route, which leaves me cold. Sounds design and textures are as good as usual though.
I am hard on his stuff because I think he still has an incredible album in him.
