Also who would give up being a mod on WATMM. The annual release of mod only RDJ tracks makes it worthwhile, nevermind the salary and benefits.

To be fair some of the banter was insanely funny, some threads and longform posts had me dying of laughter, and it was a unique flavor of funny you couldn't find elsewhere. But there was no way I could keep up and my posts got clowned on a lot, especially by a few special members. Made me feel unwelcome, though maybe I really was too young. Anyway it didn't help that I had a corny-ass fanboy username like Aphex-Tom...

The tone of the forums these days is definitely easier-going, though we've lost a little of the spice from those days.

Facebook is awash with pictures of the boxset. Looks even tackier IRL.  Like something you'd get at Argos with a  bronze replica game of thrones dagger in it. £300 lol?

Didn't buy it myself, no way I was paying €250 for a little wooden box, but no doubt people will be buying them for double or treble next week

If it was an epic new release I would be in on the hype train but buying the same release I have on the shelf for 8x the price I got it for already just to have this box?

I’ve been in the middle of moving for the past several weeks and haven’t had time to open my ultra-limited cassettes from the cardboard box they shipped in. 

Buying this tomorrow, really would like drukqs reissue at some point soon

When I had the watmm facebook fan group someone actually gave me unreleased files of a warp release that came out some months later as a thank you

anyone else got and actually listened to their copy of the tapes? the ferrics, not the limited chrome.

i just popped tape 1 in, and it sounds like absolute shit. 3 tracks in, and the sound on all of them is super heavily distorted. it's also very noisy. i expected to hear the noise, and i think some background noise goes well with an album like this, but it's beyond what i expected. but really the noise is nothing compared to the distortion. it sounds like the whole album was ran through some kind of overdrive effect. it's absolutely horrible.

anyone else's like this? someone on discogs said their copy was great sounding. they even implied it had no noise, which im pretty sure is literally impossible. but anyway. i guess it's possible i just got a bad tape, somehow. i haven't checked out the other one yet. but really i don't see how i could be the only one.

edit- just checked, tape 2 is fucked also, and both sides of both tapes. it's not just some minor nitpick, it's totally unlistenable for the most part. i don't see how my tapes could be the only ones when it's both tapes. and yet i don't see anyone else talking about this?

How's it compared to any other tapes you've got - do the heads maybe need a jolly good clean ?

i've listened to other tapes recently, and even tested a couple right after listening to SAW II (the few tracks i listened to before turning it off). they sound great. it's not the deck. it's a Marantz SD 4020. deck could probably use some maintenance, but it's absolutely not the deck.

@avinit - yeah i would've loved to get one of those chrome sets. was it collapse that he put out on chrome? i have that and it sounds much better than that ferric cheetah release (which i still enjoy on tape). but i've recorded some pretty nice sounding type 1s (ferric) on this deck, and the ferrics i've bought in the past few years all sound fine. this is beyond it just being ferrics, it's really bad. @Satans Little Helper yeah the sandpaper thing is an apt comparison.

nobody has actually said they've listened to a copy of the tape themselves though... can anyone confirm that their copy doen't sound like total shit? is there some way i could put up a couple of short clips from a few tracks so people could hear this? could i do that right here in the forum, attaching to my post as long as i kept the clips short, or would that be against the rules?

anyway, here are some examples. the first one is 3 clips from the first tape of saw 2. i didn't feel like getting anything from tape 2 but it seems just as bad. second file is taken from my tape copy of cheetah. the first track there probably wasn't the best thing for comparison because it's pretty sparse but it's pretty clear that something funky is going on with the SAW 2 tapes.

are people somehow just not noticing this? it's definitely not supposed to be like that.

it's like there's a layer of fuzz over top of everything, like it was ran through an overdrive. but it also sounds almost like it's just some kind of noise that's being somehow modulated by the music. some sounds don't seem 'distorted' at all, so that makes me think it could be some kind of modulated noise that got added onto the tape. but wtf do i know.

To be honest they both sound like they're pretty heavily overdriven to me, just the SAW one is far more noticeable (that track in particular seems to have been recorded crazy loud - even on the CD it sounds like it's clipping at some places). Sorry for the dumb question - but you're using the lineout phono ports rather than the headphone jack to record these right ? Is there any way to adjust the lineout level, or just the headphone monitoring level on that deck ?

im not gonna get offended for you asking questions, i get it. but i don't personally agree that the cheetah one sounds overdriven, at all. there's a huge difference between the SAW clips (especially the 3rd one) and the cheetah one. i could put in some other tape and make another comparison example but i don't really feel like it. there's definitely something wrong with this tape and it's not the deck, and if those clips don't convince you i don't know what will honestly.

i was going from the line output for that recording. it sounds the same way from the headphone jack. i'm pretty sure none of the volume controls adjust gain coming out of the deck, they only adjust gain for what you're recording to tape. but it's not the deck, and if you look at the waveform in those SAW examples, it doesn't even look like it's being clipped or even rounded like an overdrive. and if you notice in the first clip, the vocal sample sound doesn't even sound distorted at all. so i don't think it's actually distortion, or at least not mostly. i think it's some kind of weird added noise that is being 'modulated' somehow by the music.

Lol I actually forgot I have the Cheetah tape as well - haven't opened either of them. Hell, I haven't even opened the Syro special vinyls and probably never will. Maybe when Trump buys Greenland I'll have a listen.
