How do u start enjoying listen to Russell Haswells music?

Pick an album and press play!

Enjoyment isn't guaranteed however

you’re missing the idea. you listen to russell haswell for a while and then you will enjoy listening to anything else

His earlier noise/field recording work may be a bit of an aquired taste for the average Joe but his records on Diagonal are slightly more conventional and palatable (beats, basslines etc), I would recommend you start with one of those.

yeah but like som artists are more difficult to get into if u know.. What is the number one Russell Haswell album/ep u would recommend?

Haswell was warming up for Autechre in Helsinki in 2016, I hated it immensely.

You are in a maze of twisty little passages, all alike.

i was mostly trolling. i hear you. not really super familiar enough with his catalog to actually be helpful here. in all honesty i do appreciate there are people out there doing this kind of brutal noise work but his aesthetic isnt something i've invested a lot of time into

Same reaction the Swedes had arround that time.. they were like "Autechre was ace, Haswell sucked as usual"

Poor man 😥

Is enjoyment more guaranteed when picking an album and not pressing play?

That speaks for itself!

I met Haswell briefly after the gig while chatting with Rob & Sean, he seemed dangerously intimidating and intimidatingly dangerous, complete opposite to the relaxed, friendly manner of Autechre lads.

truly remarkable, He has a very weird aura of the little I have seen him in videos and photos

I'll stick up for ol Rusty, when I saw him live supporting ae he seemed to be playing with a no input mixer setup with him spraying a wide array of feedback over the crowd, it was tense and exhilarating. Plus his partner is the lovely Amanda Donohoe so he must be a cuddly teddybear at heart.

probably the only boiler room video without a shot of the crowd behind the performer. wonder why

I like his tribute to Cage at around the 24 minute mark of this set:

I spilled my beer on Haswell at a noise gig in Cafe OTO, he was honestly really chill about it. His Satanstornade collab with Merzbow is immense!

well if you had poured it on his rig nobody would have noticed the difference

Or kasm.

I was just recently listening to some Haswell stuff from Diagonal and some I like more than others. I can understand why some don't like it, like I understand how some people find Autechre completely impenetrable chaotic noise. And I know people who think Autechre is too poppy and "dance music". A matter of taste and perspective, innit

electro mini-album Megacity Rainfall
"cacas in igne, heus"  - Emperor Nero, AD 64

This getting hot here on watmm so I guess people think his shit is dope, I have a hard time to listen to it tho.

It is not chill for a bit!

Guys like Florian Hecker become easy listening compare to ol Russy boi here.

I like noisy stuff coming out from computers made from software but when they include stuff with gain+feedback loops from pedals, mixer boards and +10000 db they just lost me.

I remember reading him and his mate went to a Whitney Houston concert and they both turned up with bones through their noses and Extreme Cattle Death Orgy t-shirts on and the whole area around them were just staring at them but he didnt give a fuck. Right on mate.
