bass sampling

Guest Mr. Magoo

ok sorry for all the other thread which have me complaining but i want to start an ambious project of making a patch for reason.

i want to know how to record a bass guitar through an mbox?

i got a bass guitar, and i want to sample every individual note, but i'm worried that if the guitar goes straight into the mbox i wont get as good a sound if i use a shure mic, in front of a bass guitar amp?

so any of you sampling gurus or guiatr gurus! whats the best way to sample a bass guiat; direct line into 24-bit mbox --> protools/// or /// a shure mic in front of a bass guitar amp --> mbox to protools?

basically what recording method will give me a funky/rounder/fatter and bassier sound?

note; i'll do a few patches; long notes/mutes/plucking-pops-mutes + slides for all of them btw when i do the normal long notes should i let the strings fade themselves for ages or just shorten them for about 2 seconds?

if you help me out i'd be happy to give you the patch?

i'll also need some help on using the advanced sampler?

thank you for your input

IME:

record both! When I record bass i do it as follows:

bring bass up to line level with a DI box. Personally I prefer the groove tubes brick. Split the signal from the DI, line A going to bass amp, line b going direct into the mbox. mic the amp in a spot where you get decent mid range. Don't sweat the low-low stuff, the DI will catch the thunder. Also, don't be afraid to get right up on the grill of the amp. pref mics would probably be akg d112, shure sm7, shure sm57...unless you wanna go condenser. whatever...use what you have. try to avoid the preamps on the mbox unless that's all you have.

track the bass notes to seperate tracks. you may need to nudge the bass amp track back or forth a few samples to avoid any phase cancellation. mix to taste and bounce to one giant mono file. Cut the file up in recycle or by hand. create sample patch.

let me know if you have questions about any of these steps.

Ive noticed in slicer programs you could theoretically play a scale and then it would auto-slice all of the notes in scale. Never used recylcle but in other vstis and samplers you could do it. Im sure a recylcle program could do it and its a propellorheads dealy so it should translate. what he said up there.^^^

version2006? have you made a patch from your bass guitar? if so can we share?

also i went to record the notes and nticed that my bass amp has a very loud hiss/buzz, and i always have to use my forearm at the end of the bass too lower the noise as it doesn completely go away, this has always happend, but i noticed it more when the mic is in front of the amp, and it fucks up the sound, so how do i get rid of this hiss?

i really got to now, if its the ground cable thing, what do i do to eliminate the noise?

Magoo

Don't detune your bass to C. Start with playing the open E. Then play F (1st fret) then play F#. Play notes till you get to the fourth fret.

Start the next note on the next string (A). play that until you get to the 4th fret. go to the D. etc

Trust me, you'll find your C root. should be the 9th sample :)

Are you going for a real bass sound or not? You don't need to go down to a low C.

The fundamental frequency of an open E is 41.2 Hz. Is that not low enough for you? :omg:

I would focus more on the playing techniques...piano hammer, slap, thumb, plucked with the standard tuning.

do whatever you want, though.
