is MPC only great for hip-hop?

I've been thinking about getting an MPC, but I'm not 100%sure.. I've read reviews, but have'nt really meet anyone who makes techno driven music with it/ mostly just hip-hop// what say you? yay or nay?

this is just my opinion, and i know i'll get slammed down for it, but especially nowadays it seems like people just wanna use it as a drum machine sample playback thing....but as i understand it, it's a whole music production centre (hence the name). it sequences MIDI and everything.

i personally wouldn't see the point in having one - i wouldn't end up using it to it's full potential, as i prefer to have machines that have a specified function, rather than having a machine that "does it all"

well, i think it depends on what you want to do with it. the all-in-one-box idea is fits very good to hip hop IMO but there are also techno artists who use it , for example zombie nation (not all of his stuff is as cheesy as "kernkraft 400"). anyway i think you won't be able to do drill stuff or live instrument recording with it...

chris clark does have one, and well, just put it this way, he almost put me in hospital whislt using it. i nearly exploded with the ammount of bass.. fuck me.. i hurt even thinking about it, it was like being stuck in a vaccuum

The MPC has a signature "rugged" kind of sound that can beat (no pun attended) you to shit if you aren’t careful... poor moss acid.

I've spent a lot of time with the 1000 at the local guitar center because I’m obsessed with pads and almost forked out $800 for one but instead went midi and saved a bundle. It's great for laying out beats but for overall production it can be complicated and it doesnt have the best selection of effects but that where you have to be creative with your sampling.

I'm going to get one someday... but for now i'm happy with my padKontrol and soon MPD24 :)

asymetrical head reccomended WATMM to me, and its been 3 dyas since i joined and already it has helped me alot. thanx for the knowledge hand-downs

This guy who supported Vibert in Auckland, name of Phelps and Munro, did his whole set off an MPC. He was very BOC sounding to my ears.

yeah, except the neptunes use a Korg 01/W

i have a 1000 (w/ 128 meg upgrade), and i feel guilty because i don't use it nearly often enough. one of these days, i'll get around to using it hardcore, i am sure of this.

it sounds nice and it's great for grooving out with the pads. the timing feels nice, and i wish i was better at playing it. :unhappy: it works fine as a hardware sampler (the only one i own, unless you count casio SK-1), and i also like it because i can drag it to the middle of nowhere and sample things where i can't take a computer.

but, to be honest, i find myself missing the mouse when using it. the jog wheel makes me helluva impatient sometimes. i'm really more a piano roll chap, but if you have a bunch of friends over jamming around, or that's how you work in general, it's great.

by the way, is there some sort of computer patch editor for the thing? that would make me use it 36123 times more overnight.

that's why i got the padkontrol. it's like an mpc interface for your computer.

well, that's a point. it sends out midi, so i could use it as a controller...

What are the MIDI specs like for the 1000? Channels, note limit, number of songs, etc?

MPC's are great and ALOT of well-known artists use them for all styles of music. Yes, "electronic music" too.
