yeah, it's good but definitely not worth the 13 dollars for a six pack my grocery store sells it for. their nut brown is pretty good too.

I agree with the first 2 but to diss the Sierra Nevada PA... cmon! It is a beautiful beer just as Gron described and I can get a huge ass bottle of it at 7/11 for pocket change when I need a beer and am not near my place of choice. Plus beer advocate has an A- rating for it. Lastly, overly bitter? You sir have no idea!

Well do you typically like pale ales? Pale Ale's are hoppy, some more than others, and this one lies on the hoppier pale ale side... the more hoppy the more bitter.

its easy to roll off sierra nevada as a "hipster" beer....if anything Pabst is the only one that i could definitively say is a hipster beer.

 

sierra tastes good for a midrange IPA...though I prefer a strong Dogfish 90min IPA moreso....but its not bad, their wheat beer isnt horrible either...its not good...but its not bad for a midrange brewer's effort.

why do so many people like sierra nevada? bitter+gross.

 

just recently hopped on the wagon (off the wagon?)

Had Dogfish Heads 120 minute IPA yet? It's a seasonal of their they release a few times a year... well worth it if you can get your hands on one. I have brewed an Pliny the Elder clone before and the amount of hops I had to used was over whelming... I can even imagine what it would be like to manage a continuous hop dumb during a 120 minutes boil :braindance:

 

To the Sierra Nevada haters...

Read any worthy beer resource and it will tell you the Sierra Nevada Pale Ale is a fine beer; it is brewed with quality ingredients and it's affordable. As long as you are drinking it fresh (as you should with any hoppy beer) it will be delicious and refreshing. It's supposed to be bitter for fucks sake... if you don't like bitter don't drink pale ale, IPA, or IIPA's because to your under developed, pre-pubescent taste buds it won't be easy, or enjoyable to drink. Bitter beer is a lifestyle of sorts.

 

And do check out their seasonals... the Sierra Nevada Big Foot is one of the best available Barley Wines out there, their Torpedo IPA is a mighty fine IPA as well, and their collab they did with Dogfish Head, Life & Limb, was fresh and inspiring.

 

My recent adventure was with a Lost Abbey Red Poppy:

About $20 for a little 12oz bottle but well worth it. A Flanders Red style beer brewed with sour cherries and plumb, aged in oak barrels.

For my Xmas present, I got a trip to the Three Floyds brewery & brewpub in Munster, IN -- they have the craziest, awesomest beer I've ever tasted. I highly recommend anything by them.

My local supermarket now sells this regularly, (along side the more ubiquitous, and far less wonderful, stuff like Fat Tire and Sam Adams) so it's become a standard in my apartment. Old Guardian is an amazing Barley Wine... I have about 4 of them from 06 that have been aging in my closet. A buddy of mine and myself pop one every year or so to compare to the recent years.

Oh man, you're neighbors with Stone Brewing Co., too. I need to make another pilgrimage to the Bistro & Gardens soon.

I'm neighbor to a lot of fine breweries: Lightning (Poway), Lost Abbey (San Marcos), Port Brewing (San Marcos), Coronado (San DIego), Alesmith (San Diego), Ballast Point (San Diego), Alpine Beer Company (Alpine), Greenflash (Vista)... there are a few others I'm probably forgetting.

 

You don't have many brewers up in LA but you have some awesome pubs like Blue Palms :)

Typically, when I drink beer, I typically pick up some bottles of Newcastle Brown. It's near impossible to find a bar that has it on tap. This past Friday, I has the pleasure of drinking it freshhhhhhhhhh and my word, it was smooth as silk. It was my Newcastle, but with such a clarity, that I was literally stunned after my 1st shwill. Having tried that now, I am almost scared as to what the bottles will taste like afterward. Perhaps I can use my imagination and bring it back a little. I think I can.

That's balanced with the hope that that shit is biologically inert. Bottles don't have those issues, but there's more risk of light/heat damage (especially with the atrocities that are green bottles). Then there's environmental impact issues: ease of recycling vs. weight during transportation.

 

I dunno, but a good beer poured from a good can can taste ridiculously fresh.

The lining of cans supposedly contains BPA.

 

I did have a very good canned beer recently though. Coconut Porter from Maui Brewing Co. Tasted like toasted coconut, smelled like suntanning lotion...

good points. i definitely don't doubt that it can still delicious in a can. seems unlikely that it would be a fresher option overall though just judging by the sheer volume of quality beer that is bottled as opposed to canned.

on another note, my roommate's batch of english style pale/amber ale will be ready and on tap in less than a week. it looks and smells unbelievable. i'm looking forward to not having to spend money on good beer for a month.
