Squarepusher: Pretentious or Easygoing

Recommended Posts

Stupid fanboy speculations:

It's strange, but when i see him in interviews on telly he seems pretty nice and down to earth, but when i read his interviews i get a strong "pretensious prick"-vibe. Anyone else think this is strange? Discuss.

I think its all a bit of a fake personna hes developed. Just a bit of rumour spreading. Like aphex does.

So many artists and musicians do it. They create a charactor that their fan base can relate to. In SP's case its the troubled genius. I met a couple times, just seemed like a good bloke, slightly cooky, but isnt everybody.

Hes just fuelling a myth IMO

I also think alot of people tend to confuse vocabulary with pretentiousness.

I don't think the gracefully sheepish Tom who put up with the inane drolling of that UK TV Host's questions about Outkast could really be that bad a guy.

Just what i thought. He seems like a nice guy, and seems positive to the Andre 3000 -thing, but:

The main criterion is the lyrical content. I wouldn't want to be another production vehicle for some Outkast derivative style pop. I would have to probe his intellect to see if we could come up with some sort of agreed standpoint on lyrical content. I suspect that there is a bigger cultural divide across the Atlantic than people think. It's easy to wash over that with time honoured themes of sex + love etc, but if one wanted to go beyond this consensus lyrical territory, I dare say the cultural differences would start to become clearer. We'll see.

...he seems a tad bit more critical to the whole thing. But it's just speculations, really. Not all that important as the music's still good.

he has every right to be a little bit cocky and arrogant as far as im concerned, he has earned the right to that personality trait

His confidence and passion just rub off as arrogance, it happens to the best of us.

Seconded.

He's a cunt...

The rumour has it that Richard has thousands of unreleased tracks. Do you have loads of unreleased material yourself?

I’ve got about six or seven hundred unreleased tracks, Aphex’s got about three or four hundred, Mike’s probably got about six or seven hundred, and same for Tom. I’ve got all of Richard’s stuff, and all of Mike’s, and they’ve got all my stuff, but Tom rarely gives us any of his tracks. He’ll play us bits of something, and I’ll be asking if I can get it, and he just says no.

That quote's from the BBC interview for Hello Everything isn't it? He talks so much shit in that interview. For example he acts like he's too intelligent to have heard of the phrase "Have a bash". I would take that with a lump of salt.

email interviews vs. camera interviews.

if you were to write down that interview of his from that bbc scotland thing, you'd probably think he was pretentious, written down.

he seemed cool when i met him at a show, i mean, he actually talked to me (while he was trying to watch his brother DJ). but being a fanboy i'm sure he thought "oh another guy who recognizes me from the Ultravisitor cover" and i guess i fawned a little bit while trying to retain my composure. i don't think he bought the part about being a fan of his for a long time, but it was genuine.

did you touch his bum?

Evidently (as per some of his older interviews), he began to read some philosophy, and this is probably why his interviews come off as so severely analytical. However, I would not confuse this for pretention. If you see through his dry, sometimes convuluted sentences, you'll find that what he's saying is logical and often true.

I like TJ's music a lot and overall he comes accross as passionate and a nice bloke but i don't understand why he gives interviews when he claims over and over that its really about the music speaking for itself. Well then shut up already, and let it!

Aphex has the same attitude of "its the music that matters" but at least comes across as being a bit mischievious in interviews and enjoys the laugh he gets ut of the silliness of it all. TJ just seems to get wound up a little - so he shouldn't really bother. He's come across a lot better if he either just kept to the technical stuff or stayed quiet.

autechre are great for just gettig into technically what they do and what they like while BoC seem to be a little the same. TJ is the only one who seems to be self-defeating in it all because, despite him saying he doens't give a hoot, it comes across that he does... and it's a tad hypocritial.

Mind you his best interviews are the 1996 mtv ones and the techTV one as he DOES simply talk techy and passionately. Stick to that formula, igore the media hyped, what-does-it-mean crap and you can't go wrong really.

Then again IF he truely doesn't give a hoot then he can ultimately say anything he feels like at that moment in time and not be worried about how it looks to anyone......and i like to think thats really what he's about.
