i scored ICBYD on cassette on Ebay in a big bundle of other tapes...less than $5 too.

i still think it's the best way to listen to that album, for me. something about it.

i dunno.

cassettes were the first medium i owned anything on, but CDs took over when i was still fairly young. i don't feel that much of an emotional attachment to cassttes. no more than CDs, anyways.

why is it your preferred medium for that album? is it something about the album itself, or is it just your personal emotional attachment to cassettes?

if there's something i'm missing about them... for gods' sakes, tell me!

i certainly agree they are mechanically fun... rotatey thingies and teeth... but CDs are shiny, i guess?

Cassettes are well cool, I think it's the analogue feeling that comes from the tape hiss. I take it that they're officially dead now? Since the Tatamax tape and the promos for 'Draft 7.30' and 'Sheath' I can't say that I've noticed any. Shame.

Anybody own the cassette single of 'Pac-Man'? Cassette singles were the bollocks. Probably pointless, but the bollocks nonetheless.

I have an original Melodies from Mars cassette, as well as a MD that was recorded off of one of Richard's DATs from his communal house days.

Why did you say that ! Why did u say thaaat :unhappy:

share ! eurgl

All will be revealed... eventually.

man... you've been saying that for years. Come on with it... I thought Rich said he didn't mind you putting up a track or samples or something. give us a taste... no reason to just horde it away, esp if the artist says it's cool to share. hmmmmm???? purrrty please... with sugar(land) on top!?!? also, I would LOVE to hear quality versions of MfM. I would be so inclined to send you (at my expense) my Tascam 122 Pro Cassette player for capturing the audio to hard disk. those tracks are magic. Give it a thought J....

Well, I just want to make sure when I get sued for copyright infringement I have a whole, professional site to back it up!

Thing is, Richard told me to release certain tracks - unfortunately, that PM got nuked when WATMM went offline with our other ISP. I don't want intentionally piss the guy off, but at the same time I would like you guys to hear this stuff.

it would indeed be nice to hear these track joyrex. it's almost gauranteed that teh aphex is ne'er going to release them, however i dont think that any member here would be opposed if a newly registered member named something along the lines of 'new_guy' put the files up on rapidshare and sent a link here. fortunately you control registration so getting the account made should not be a problem. further more my post will self-distruct eliminating any possible suspicion or ties to the suggestion. joyrex, no more excuses will be necessary, i've taken care of the masterminding.

well a lot of it probably has to do with some sort of nostalgia i guess... though embarrassingly i was using a cassette walkman every day until about 3 years ago  but the sort of teenage generation around now probably never used cassettes so they're kind of a curiosity object in that way.

aesthetically they look good... that mike and rich tape someone just posted looks really nice - solid colour cases have a really nice look about them. they're pretty nice tactile object because of their size and the fact you can't scratch them like a CD or record. and they split records in two like vinyl - which is something i always like.

the sound is a bit mushy obviously, but it's quite nice because it sort of smudges the high-end and kind of "gels" music together (a sort of natural compression i guess)

the thing i like most about them is mixtape type stuff... it's like a hand-made birthday card compared to the hallmark version that is a CD.

i read a quote somewhere where someone said that cassettes are like cats because they lead all sort of different lives. that is, that you might tape a record on one side and still have 5 minutes left at the end which has a remnant of something you taped off the radio years ago and then a recording of a rehearsal or something. recently i went through 50 or 60 blank cassettes i had where i had just taped random things since i was a kid... lots of recordings of random music i liked off the radio, weird talk-back callers in the middle of the night, recordings of my friends talking at school, crappy guitar demos from when i was 15... they're just kind of like scrapbooks and because it's an analogue medium and you have to spool tape etc - you don't really know what's there! it was really fun going through it all because there was all this stuff i had completely forgetten about... that's what i like most about cassettes.

there's this website where the guy posts excerpts from tapes he gets at garage sales and that... there's quite a lot of interesting weird stuff on there too:

sweet thunger tape findings

that's the sort of thing i love!

fantastic answer, sounds about right to me. i do like the the weird findings idea...

  Quote
"Who is that talking to Richard on '4'?"

Richard is actually letting his dad into his tank there. Richard explains,

"My dad called me for tea, and I answered. My mum and dad's voices are in

loads of my old stuff. Six years later I find these conversations I had with

my dad while I'm in-between hitting something and recording it." That would

also explain the tape loading noises used throughout the song.

in another thread, someone posted, pointed out MfM is NOT COPYRIGHTED and that posting would be okay

just don't sell CD-Rs and everyone will be happy i wager

Nooooo... MfM IS under copyright - that's how I got busted the first time when I got MfM and put up MP3s for everyone back on joyrex.com! Just because it's unreleased does NOT mean it's not copyrighted.

cool man... thanks for the additional info.

once, I told somebody, fairly close to Richard, to let him know that a hick in KY (me) would love to have MfM officially released someday. I wonder if he had a laugh? hehhee... He probably doesn't give a shit about it. But, you never know. Those tracks are super minimal and bare bone material - but dead-on for impact and structure. They really have a unique style of their own. He's got to realize that. He did at some point, as he did send out tapes to people.

Since "fingerbib" (or whatever the alternate title is) is part of that MfM collection of tracks - I'd assume it would be difficult to include that track - if the MfM collection were to be ever officially released. That track, being more or less in the same (but shortened) form is on the RDJ album - which is licensed, copyrighten, and connected to a multitude of musical corporations who have released multiple formats of that album. Then, what the hell do I know... Warp found a way to put out the 26 Mixes collection, which is more or less what I'm talking about. I guess as long as everyone gets "a cut", cool projects are released. Nevermind.... zzzzzzzz good night

Is that track still floating about thats about 2:51 long that was supposed to be from a cassette that aphex gave someone?

I had it years ago but got lost in the epic zip disc/ other computer switch and got lost. If anyone knows what I'm talking about and willing to share I will be eternally grateful.

well in some cases i guess...

but i was permanently plugged into a cassette walkman from the ages of 7 to 16... my first record i ever bought myself was queen's 'flash gordon' on cassette at the age of 8... have about 100 old cassettes of taped conversations, demos, weird stuff off the radio... made tape compilations to listen to every morning walking to and from school... still record the majority my music onto a four-track cassette recorder. i'm not being retro or ironic in the least about it.

I record mostly on 4-track too, cos it's so fast and simple. But fuck buying tapes for listening to. I quite like the present - no need to live in the past!

Are you going to tell me cassettes sound better? For complex electronic music? Please, be my guest. I could use a laugh.

all analog formats add their unique and specific 'texture' to the audio, however the unique texture only 'adds' to certain albums, but 'takes away' from most.

simple solution: record tape noise without other audio and layer it over digital tracks (as a filter) to avoid the need for keeping cassettes.

i was merely pointing out the irony of your post regarding distaste for cassettes and the people who love them, with the word "analogue" in your name.

and yes, cassettes do sound better, for alot of music, not just electronic, to alot of people. of course it's all subjective and you clearly have the fact nailed down so there's no room left for speculation or opposing opinions is there?

you people take yourselves way too seriously.
