Rubin Farr
i don't know why a lot of people bash this series, it's one of the best HBO has ever produced in my opinion. my friends thought it wasn't 'epic' enough, but i think they were expecting Gladiator 2. it's been the most expensive series to date on HBO, and you can see it in the production values. as with most people, my only gripe is the manipualtion of the timeline, but they don't have 30 yrs to tell the story, and this isn't even the whole story just the most interesting parts. i thought it would have been cool to get to the birth of Jesus, but that's like another 40 yrs on from where it's ending. i've been checking the historical accuracy against what they've portrayed, so i pretty much know what's going to happen. it will be a cool way to wrap it all up. Guest Internet circa 1996
yea, a history professor at my university almost had an orgasm when talking about 'Rome' so it's probably historically pretty accurate. Only seen the first four episodes myself Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/19046-rome-the-series/#findComment-388743 Share on other sites

Guest catsonearth
i've tried to watch the show, my girl watches it, but i just couldn't get into it. it wasn't all that interesting. it's obvious the audience they're trying to reach (males 18-30) because there is random gratuitous sex and violence sprinkled throughout to keep that audience interested. i don't really identify with that shit. its not that i don't like random sex and violence, i just don't like it when its an obvious ploy to get people watching the show. it doesn't usually enhance the show, it just seems like in the editing room they were like "ok, this is getting a little boring here...let's splice in some naked chick taking a bath". i'm also not too fond of the fact that they try to make the show sound serious and accurate is by having everyone speak with a british accent. kinda gets on my nerves. it's such an annoying cliche for historical dramas that grates on me. plus, out of all the shit that's happened in the history of the world, couldn't they have picked a better, not played out story? historical dramas are always about the same shit all the time. i've already read the fucking play, i've already seen a billion movies about it...why not do something i haven't seen already? i commend them for having a more in-depth telling of the story, but the story just doesn't do much for me. That's the closest they can get to the original language without completely alienating their audience with subtitles I think. Does my head in as well. Also I hate that same thing in FFXII. Doing a medieval looking setting? Make most everyone British! Fuck off. Anyway, I've seen this show about, I've always been interested in the Roman times. Worth checking out would you say? Rubin Farr
definitely. just don't expect an epic battle in every episode, this is television. after doing some reading, i realized that this is really the only time Shakespeare wrote 2 plays on the same storyline, Julius Caesar, and Antony & Cleopatra. and the way the producers divided the seasons, that's pretty much how they are layed out: season 1 - Caesar, season 2 - Antony & Cleopatra. brilliant. Guest dinner at my house
How is showtime responsible for its consistent run of shitty programming? It seems showtime has never broken out of its mold of delivering crap shows. Unprecedented failure. Rubin Farr
a great ending to a great series. my one disappointment was not seeing Octavian delcare himself emperor, which i thought would be the money shot, but the look his mother gave him made up for it. ah well... playbynumbers
i watched up to s1e4 of rome ... painfully bad. period detail and not much else. the acting was terrible, the writing was terrible, and there was random sex/violence i guess 'because they can', or to help ratings. i guess it just proves that hbo can have regular (i.e. shitty) tv as well as great tv though if other people have gotten into the show, i dunno, to each his own ... i'm probably too picky about most art-type stuff anyway Thanks Haha Confused Sad Facepalm Burger Farnsworth Big Brain Like × Quote Hide playbynumbers's signature Hide all signatures vinyl for sale photography!
