sts9 never claimed to be anything close to IDM and anyone who says it is is sadly misguided. it's not even "electronic music" imo.

it's rhythm-centric groove-rock. they have a synth or two, and they incorporate samples and glitchy beats using monomes but their main percussion comes from two live drummers. their music (esp. live) progresses and ascends, building and rushing the listener in waves, each measure becoming a straining grasp at (for lack of a better word) nirvana.

in other words, it's much closer to gong and hawkwind than it is to afx and ae. which is not necessarily a bad thing.

I've been trying to come up with the closest thing to sts9 that I would consider idm and my only idea is watery glass planet from stopthepanic (and that's only because it's a rhythm-driven track with subdued guitar soloing over the top)

(I hereby confess to being a drug-addled neo-hippy stumbling through bong-haze)

I used to love MMW but that is as far as I ever took it....

I do love prog rock and kraut rock....

I love it because there is so much of that rules....

STS9 just sounds too polished/plain and like a mix cd named 'The Buddha Dance Experiment' or summat...
