one would imagine that if a musician names a song after you, then you're allowed a few yellow cards before you get the red card.

"Hey Rich, with the greatest respect, drukqs is quite good! I only have a few minor comments.."

That's what really happened.

oh come on gerald, "quite good" is a terrible thing to say to someone who sent you an advance cdr of their new album. you still don't see that?

Apparently in the states quite good would mean greater than good, but quite good in the UK means like average or something.

That's pretty much the whole reason it started I think, if I was arguably one of the best composers of all time and someone said that to me.. My ego would definitely get hurt, but I wouldn't dare tell one of my biggest fans to fuck off or whatever. Maybe Richard was just having a shitty day/frustrated, perhaps those around him completely misunderstood Drukqs ahead of release.

sarcasm is a spice. you have to mix it up. if your whole personality is sarcasm, imo you come off like a complete dick. its a totally condescending attitude and usually it's not warranted (read- far from) in the people who have it

and fuk a country of special little darlenes who say 'quite good' when they mean something sucks

95% of British people don't act like that, a lot of people working in the business districts of London are cunts though. I think Richard definitely took it as a bit of pretentiousness from Joyrex, in England 'quite good' from arguably your number one fan would be pretty disconcerting, you might even think they had some sort of problem with you.

He probably expected "mind blowing" or whatever, and rightfully so :emotawesomepm9:

bollocks. Americans don't think "quite good" means "very good". And british people don't say "quite good" when they mean "shit". quite good only means quite good. good but not great. was alright. if you thought it was very good you would have said so. you only thought it was quite good. which is fine but says more about your social graces than anything. if you were at a show and went backstage - would you tell the artist that their performance was "quite good"? of course not. if you liked it you would enthuse somehow. if not you would find something good to say about it such as you loved their "energy" or light show (i dunno). quite good to someones faces is just not done, as its like saying yeah it was passable and no one wants to be told they are passable.

This.

i think all of this just shows the inherent danger of trying to talk like a British person in any way shape or form simply by being an American fan of UK electronic music. It's been quite a while here since americans were throwing around the word 'mate' in a serious fashion, and for that I am very fucking glad.

It confuses the hell out of me when an American says 'mate'. In England it's usually a more of a 90s working class thing to say, the equilavent to 'dude' in the US, if you're American imagine a British person saying 'bro.' you have no idea how to take it haha..

yes I can see how Americans saying mate might be a bit cringe worthy, a bit like British chap saying 'dude', heheh. It just doesn't work

Lol, beat me to it.. But a few of us say 'dude', grounds the conversation a bit if things are too serious.

No, not really. I said it was "spending a lot of time in my CD player". Hardly a critical comment IMO.

Can't believe all this has been unearthed again. As Vic and Bob used to say "You wouldn't let it lie!"

Apart from the cultural differences, it's also of "some" value to consider that when you send a demo to someone who runs a fansite basically dedicated to you, and he responds with "quite good"...

Quite good according to the guy who basically runs your biggest fansite. Even without british context "quite good" sounds quite horrible. Cooome on people. If your biggest fans say quite good, it's like being stabbed with a knife. ...(hyperrrrrrbole)

That's a very confusing message, you usually only say "with the greatest respect" when you're about to say something negative. And then to say "quite good" with an exclamation mark... BUT to then say "i only have a few minor comments" makes it sound a little erm, well not good. I get both sides of the arguement now, thanks for posting Berk. I think the best thing to do is just never attempt to communicate with people ever.

i've decided to live forever

Well, I personally don't think it's a decision we have any say in - once your cells reach their predetermined limits, that's it - game over - dirt nap time.

The one very valuable lesson in this whole fiasco is this: be honest - if you want to gush over something you genuinely like, do it - if the person who is the recipient of your praise is embarrassed or off-put by it, that's THEIR problem. Don't feel like you should hold back or temper your praise by avoiding superlatives that would seem unsightly or fanboyish.

Now, that being said, don't swing the pendulum in the opposite direction either...

"Hey Rich, with the greatest respect, drukqs is quite good! I only have a few minor comments.."

thats sort of sounds condescending, but saying that to Aphex, almost makes it hilarious lol

Wow, this is the first I've heard of this legendary exchange. What an insane reaction to a compliment. I always thought he was pretty cool until now. Ah well, the music's still quite good.
