Guest Dogboy73
I've never seen any of the early releases & we've heard few of the tracks from them. We hear about plenty of people who know someone, who's mate has a copy etc. But we've never actually seen any evidence on these forums. A photo of someone holding the bloody things would be nice! We've never even had that to my knowledge. Does that mean they don't exist? I'm saying nothing more on the topic after the last time I did. Following which lots of people got very upset over me even suggestion such a thing! I felt like Darwin informing the rest of the scientific community that we all evolved from Monkeys! More like a compilation someone else put together. Ho many of the track on those 'old tunes' compilations are tracks from the early BoC releases? People have speculated that some of the tracks are infact from the early Boc 'releases' (Acid Memories, Hooper Bay, Catalog 3, Closes Volume 1 etc...) but this has never been confirmed. Jesus man, how many times has this been gone over? Have you ever looked at the artwork for the Old Tunes tapes? The tracklists are handwritten, in the same exact style of handwriting as the Twoism tracklist. They've gone as far as confirming that they're legitimate in a somewhat recent interview, with Marcus quoted, saying something along the lines that they should have been more careful about who they gave those tapes to in the first place, basically saying that far more of those tapes were produced than earlier releases. He went on to say they know who leaked them, and that they expected Acid Memories to leak next, but they might have just been tongue in cheek about the comment. Keep in mind that these were tapes were put together in 1995-1996 (though recorded earlier), much later than their pre-Twoism releases, during a time that they were trying to build their name in the electronic music community. Their pre-Old Tunes stuff was basically just given to friends and family. Then again, some people still believe in creationism and George Bush. Certain people just believe what they want to believe regardless of the reality everyone else is living in. Also, did you miss the Old Tunes eBay drama where someone from Hexagon Sun posted here about it? But the pre-old tunes stuff just given to friends a family? When those releases were on the Boards of Canada website discography (They were taken off that site about 3 or 4 years ago if I recall) it stated that the pressing numbers were between 50 to 100 on various formats. That's a lot of friends a family! But if there were that many surely some of them would have surfaced by now? We've not even seen the tracks on any dodgy file sharing sites let alone the actual release. With most of the stuff we've seen, with the possible exception of one or two tracks) it turns out it came from the Old tunes. http://fredd-e.narfum.org/boc/discog/#catalog3 Edited September 9, 2007 by Dogboy73 Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/25763-ebay/#findComment-545543 Share on other sites

Yes it is strange how 3 old tunes compilations have leaked but nothing else... Especially since it states on the discog that they were 'very rare!' cassette only and yet the old albums supposedly have a few hundred cd pressings (1997) as well as original cassettes. The other thing about the old tunes is that only 2 of them have artwork and tracklistings etc... The old tunes vol1 (as it is presumed) has no artwork or listings with it (as we know of) which makes this compilation more uncertain as to what it really is.. although for me its the best of the 3 and is the most BoC sounding too. I have often thought that the 3 compilations together are pretty much everything pre-twoism and old tunes vol1 is most probably from the old ep's and albums (i know i could be talking out of my arse cos i dont really know but there isnt anything to prove otherwise). Track lengths dont match up with the old albums but then again they do start and end a bit sudden at times. Also the tracks overlap each other quite a lot and fade into each other so its hard to say. Also some of old tunes vol1 might be short samples from the old albums (weve got 3 already in duffy circle and wyltbf so why should there not be more?) I dont know DOGBOY you always seem to get a hard time over whether they exist or not. I hope they do. I dont know DOGBOY you always seem to get a hard time over whether they exist or not. I hope they do. I think the situation is that the Old Tunes tapes were actually compiled after Twoism and Maxima, sometime before Hi Scores was released, cherry picking their older material that seemed the most similar to what they were putting out at that time. This was a pretty turbulent time for them, as they were building their name in the electronic music scene and probably dealing with some people for the first time that might not hold their music as closely or privately as they would have liked. The tapes are basically compilations of their time - you don't really get a taste of their supposedly gothic or MBV phases like they've talked about in interviews, other than a couple of songs on OTV1 that use more traditional instrumentation. We'll probably never know, but it's a safe bet that something like Play by Numbers which sounds like it's probably the closest thing they've done to straight ahead rock music based on the sample they released from Wouldn't You Like to Be Free? and that sound probably wasn't very compatible with how they were trying to establish themselves around the time of Twoism and Hi Scores. This is more or less right - what you've heard on these leaked compilations is really only the tip of the iceberg. There's a number of other compilations, demos and so on that were made even prior to these, going back years, beyond the handful of known titles that have surfaced. Bear in mind that even the tapes and discs that were put together and distributed are still relatively only a small selection picked from a much larger legacy of unheard work. If they were to release every single track they've ever recorded, you'd be looking at a massive number of albums simply to get through it all. Behind the scenes Mike and Marcus are very prolific, and have always produced a lot of what they call 'collateral' material. There's a huge archive. Some of the material dates right back to 1983, but the real body of work in the archives begins around 1986-1987 and ramps up around 1991. The band has been working through these archives for the past two years or so - whenever they've been free, in an effort to place the work into 'chapters'. But it's a huge time-consuming job in itself just to archive it properly and clean it up. (The analogue cassette archive alone took a year or so to work through). It seems there's a good chance that some of the older work (and the side-project work) will now get a release in some form, maybe in installments. The plans for this are still being thrashed out, although it's always a low-priority issue as obviously the upcoming album is the main thing everyone is concentrating on right now. I hope this clears it up a bit for you!
