i agree i love ultravisitor but the mastering or eqing or something is off. it sounds tinny in places, in fact even worse it's really variable. which makes me think he wanted it like that, the mad bastard.

I would rather consider the sound quality of Hard Normal Daddy quite poor, knowing that it got mastered.

yes but at some point the music is so good it just doesn't matter

the "poor" mastering even gives it a distinguished charm

All the dodgy productions seems to me like it's done on purpose. Burningn'n Tree is fucking awful in places, isn't there some 64kbps amen in there somewhere. Admittedly I haven't listened to it in a while but I remember it peaking on tracks and everything. Not sure if all that lot is done on purpose but I was assuming Ultravisitor was for some reason. A lot of the drum beats seem like they are high-passed or something, they don't really have much kick in them.

even if the 'live' sounding parts aren't actually live, they're still recorded in some sort of physical room space. there's a lot of playing around with playback-in-room audio and then switching back to native inside-the-computer (or whatever) audio - all which kind of adds to the weird atmosphere of the whole thing.

the switch from live to processed drums at the start of tetra-sync is a goodun. always makes me smile.

the tundra 4 12" has quite a similar sounding mastering/eq job actually.

Squarepusher likes lo-fi, that's all. Feed Me Weird Things, Hard Normal Daddy, Music Is Rotted One Note and Budakhan Mindphone were also poor sounding.

I always thought that album sounded pretty good. Sure you aren't thinking of Maximum Priest EP?

I definitely think the sound quality lends to the album favorably. I don't know if it's his best album, but man... with songs like Iambic 9 Poetry, Circlewave, and Tetra-Sync... I can't understand calling the album crap. Tetra-Sync has some of Tom's best moments on bass imo.

ps.

Yeah my view is that Tom seems to be mic'ing his output for the final mastering on many instruments in Ultravisitor, he's done that all the time. That's why there's a live-feel to it, the feedback and weird mastering.

There's none of that in Hello...

false.

Circlewave for example, he said was recorded one instrument at a time, and only listening to the part recorded previously as a backing track...you can hear the snare vibrating to what was presumably the previous part, bass for example, so there is a little bit of overlap.

Just a theory, though i can't think of many other examples

To me, ultravisitor is his best album by far... it creates an atmosphere unique to itself and inhabits it beautifully, even though it's completely shifting shape with every track.. like confield kind of

Tough question...

But my vote is for Tetra-Sync.
