shit aphex tracks

wow i think this is the first time ludd and i disagree on an aphex-twin related matter.

what you think of windowlicker, ludd? i never really got into it tbh

i think windowlicker is brilliant

i love how richard can put out something that sounds little like his back catalogue and yet so quintessentially afx that it simply could not be made by anyone else. the track windowlicker is a good example of that.

it's a fun record and outfunks most other dance music easily.

i probably listen to the run jeremy version more often these days

windowlicker b-sides are brilliant too

the formula track is cool at 33 or 45 and nannou is beautiful

i wouldnt file it as a shit aphex track but a lot of people got turned on to aphex by it. so relative to the appreciation it gets, i dont like it, but i'd never skip it if it came up on random. and sometimes i actively seek it.

i guess at the time of its release i was wanting something different. probably something more breaky--i probably wanted something like drukqs then, because when drukqs came out i was like, alright, back on track.

windowlicker ep is solid

windowlicker is bit hard to seperate from the context of all the hype and the music video and stuff but it's really well put together, and heavily stacked vocals had a large influence on me.

the formula song is a bit mean to the ears, i feel like he compromised a bit for the novelty of using spectral imagery. it's still a breakthrough track

nanou is beautiful

only trouble with it is that each track sort of stands alone, i don't get a sense that they are the same album... like i'll crave them independantly, being in the mood for one... letting it transition to the next track doesn't match the previous mood for me. but that also shows how creative rich is, he's not just crapping out everything on top of an amen break like tommy tom does so often. (i still love tom though)

maybe AFX Acid 04 and hmmm... come to daddy I actually still like after all these years, especially when played really loud at night on the highway. The funniest thing is that even when there's a so called "bad" RDJ track, it still doesn't sound like it could have been made by anyone else but him, thus still making it quite unique. For example Vaz Deferenz is a okay kinda crappy little repetetive diddle, but its still RDJ to the bone.

BUT.... For me(if I had to choose), the only tracks that have gotten unlistenable for me are Garden of Linmiri and Quoth. These two tracks were banging when they came out. Super hard core. But now I can't even really think of why I liked them. I guess it's probably because what RDJ does so well is his work with synths and they are pretty absent from these tracks. I wouldn't feel this way if he had never came out with ICBYD, because the synths are so great on that album and really emotional. So now whenever I here RDJ tracks without synths I kinda feel a little robbed.

what about those crap tracks on AB3. the ambient one and the one that sounds like breathing in a shower.

TRUTH... but I think there should be a distinction between bad music, and really thoughtless filler like the bit tracks or the pointless tracks on AB3.

I downloaded UI Red and thought it was fairly crap.

yeah, Analord 1 is my favourite of the series! (10 is more consistent, but it's only two tracks)

Come To Daddy got me into AFX, and I still love it, actually I think it was the first song I played to try out my new stereo at the start of the year (which is getting repaired at the moment ) - it's awesome for checking out bass response. I was really blasé about Windowlicker when it first came out - mind you, it was a shitty 96kbps mp3 leak, IIRC. Nowadays I think it's good fun, a cheeky drill'n'pop song like I think that Come To Daddy is.

I vote for that one too. The track is so dumb and even the production is laughable, the compression is a joke as opposed to let's say Windowlicker, which is excellent productionwise.

thats funny, I hated come to daddy when I first heard it and it has continually grown on me I like it now.

SOme stuff on ICBYD I don't care for. also some of the analog bubblebath stuff. Some of the tuss and analord as well, like the simple synthy ones just lack something the rdj used to have, or used to have quality control for (i.e. shiz ko e, and goodbye rute, a bunch of analord stuff).
