i got the amen from that bourbon breaks link ("the common breaks" thread), and obviously doesn't sound as you hear it on most commercial cd's (like squarepusher -the more new stuff, not "burningn'n tree" since it sounds awful- or venetian snares).

there it sounds more clear (probably eq'd on the higher frequencies) and with more "punch" ("little" bit of compression).

any tips on how to make it nicer? i've tried but...

thanks

EQing a whole kit of drums as one probably won't sound good

if it's the high end that you feel needs energy then try an "exciter" of some sort that will add harmonics or plseant distortions, rather than boosting what's there.

but really i think your best bets are:

A. stop using the damn amen break already

B. compliment it as is with the right sounds, rather than trying to make it fit with whatever hoover bass.

Yeah I'll second that, a lot of them are lo-fi as mentioned somewhere in the Squarepusher forum (by me and others) but they are like 430horlfnojetr;. Some of the best amens I've heard.

i've never used the amen break :ermm:, thanks for the tip

Yes but everyone and their pets has... which I think is the point he's trying to make... I don't see much point in using it anymore except for kitsch value.... which is fine really... but I guess at the end of the day if it sounds good it sounds good so I dunno...

me going to be nice :shade:

to make it more classic.

1. pull down the high treble frequencies to make it cassette-like.

2. Add some reverb to make it more flowing if it sounds disjointed.

3. If it has to much punch try either compressing the kick or lowering dominant frequencies until it sounds flat.

4. The hihats typically need to have some badly eq'd frequencies but its pretty hard to do.

That's about all I can think of.

It has taken me about 5 years to get good at making/altering beats but anyone can do it. It's just alot of stuffing around to find out what different things do.

AHHHHHH FUCK THE FUCKING AMEN BREAK YOU FUCKING CRUTCH USING FAGGOTS!

snares told me that the fucking amen was all about eq, but i refuse to believe that.

no ones amen break can ever fucking top fucking pendulums fucking amen.

if you want yer smen to sound fucking tight. . . take the fucking original amen break.

split that shit in to two tracks , the right and left.

process each fucking side wit it's envelops.

then make it mono.

then layer it it and re fucking process the fuck out of it until it sounds like some what of what pendulums which you can not even come close to.

if you want a clean amen, sample pendulum's amen.

but i'll let you know.

yes i know that the fucking amen is an element to electronic music, techno. car commercials, jungle drum and bass just as the 303 is used for acid, just as the 808 is used for rap.

but seriously people.

a sample is a sample. if you wanna stand out and be original, then leave the fucking amen alone and be a fucking innovator, for reals.

the amen break is justa crutch for lazy fucks.

SOOOOOOOO MANY FUCKING BREAKS OUT THERE THAT ARE JUST AS GOOD OR IF NOT EVEN BETTER THAN THE AMEN BREAK.

SO FUCKING SICK OF THE AMEN BREAK IT'S RIDICULOUS.

GET OVER IT.

I DISLIKE USING THE SAME SAMPLES, GOD FORBID ONCE THAT YOU KNOW THAT THERE IS LIFE AFTER THE AMEN THAT YOU USE THE AMEN EVER AGAIN!!!!.

be innovative you fucking lazy cunts make yer own fucking breaks wit single shots.

Please!!1

please i fucking beg you!

stop using the fucking amen break!

Shut it, cunts. No one wants to hear your babbling. Why don't you two go ahead and innovate and leave the rest of us to make what we like, ok?

You guys crack me up. Such vitriol.. Such ignorance. It's truly stunning.

Anyway, my two cents on the amen is that it's all about isolating those two or three relatively long, relatively clean ride cymbals. They provide the tonal basis for the whole loop. If you can't figure the rest out, there's always stamp collecting.

more to the point, do you think snafu has to work hard at being a total dick or does it just come naturally?

Guest esquimaw

The most intense sounding amen break I've heard is the one off the old classic 'Jungle Warfare' sample CDs. It's ruff ting. Don't really know what they did to it, lots of depth and top etc.

Personally I think the best way of getting that flowing kind of sound from breaks is to just retrigger it from different parts of the loop, MPC/renoise style.. Always seems to sound better than just sequencing the individual hits - mix up the styles. Woo - breakcore.

The sooner you figure out how to get the amen sounding good, the sooner you'll get over it. Do it soon and carry on with the rest of your life.

No, I just use the 09xx commands in Renoise. Works well enough for me.

amen's over-rated. use something fucking original.

lol@the idea of other prerecorded drums or synth drum samples being "original".

%99 of the sounds everyone in electronic music use are done to death. it's like complaining a crunk rapper isn't original enough.
