what does everyone see in philip glass? it never ceases to amaze me how he gets away with writing music that would fail at gcse composition level

music isnt about fitting requirements so you don't "fail"

he makes music that I think is very emotional, and captivating.

is it philip glass that you don't like, or minimalism?

it amazes me that some people still believe music is entirely scientific and zero percent emotional....go back to listening to people tell you what good music is.

you're both totally missing my point, i think the minimalist movement was a perfectly viable route for interesting (and sometimes great) composition i.e. terry riley, steve reich etc. but i just don't see how philip glass measures up. His harmonies strike me as dull and naive, his compositions over-long and boring and the fact that he is a minimalist seems more of a handy way of covering up his inadequacies as a musician rather than displaying any real artistry.

also, i completely disagree that music is entirely scientific and zero percent emotional. I have often been told of the virtues of schoenberg's serialist music but in my opinion it lacks the emotional backbone which i believe all great music requires. So Matt Leskom i agree with your argument, just don't direct it at me simply becuase i think that philip glass's compositions lack substance.

well, if you feel that way, fair enough. I just totally disagree with all of your points :)

You asked, so I told you. It just gets me on a gut level. I can't explain it, I just find it emotional.

And schoenberg is hit and miss for me. Some of his stuff I just think, wow, this is soulless, and other stuff makes me go jesus, this guys brilliant. Thats really how I feel about most 12 tone stuff... its either incredibly great, or incredibly bad.

bar his very, very early stuff, glass claims not to be a minimalist.

he preferred the term 'cellular music' for a lot of his seventies stuff (music in twelve parts being the archetypical example), and these days, he's a lot closer to 'traditional' classical music than anything else.

and yeah passages is a cracking album, forgot about that; i don't have it any more.

must slsk it actually.

FLOE is the most amazing music to listen to whilst studying subjects such as Galactic Filaments, its like every little sentence you read is the most amazing and epic transcendental thing to ever exist.

i've seen truman show, never saw the other thing that music is featured in. i always liked the score to that movie though, especially at the end when he's in a boat and it crashes into the wall of the dome he lives in.

although apparently that's wojciech kilar, not philip glass

Raising the Sail?

PG wrote it, and expanded that piece (into a 16-minute concerto) as "Tirol Concerto, Mvt. II"

Ah yes good point about not being PG, you are absolutely correct. It doesn't fit his style at all, or my style? (meta-lol), that youtube is more Arvo-Part-post-modernism. I don't remember mucha bout the movie but yeah Raising the Sail is when he goes out on the boat, what you posted is that door at the end of the "world". Kilar is a great composer, I'm really into music soundtracks so I've got a couple of him. I love his dark thematics.

I've got this painting as a T-shirt. Bought it at the Gap, that kinda makes the point moot, but yeah. And Mad Rush for Organ is on a album called Glass Organ Works

i get so sick of academic music faggotry school of thought criticizing philip glass for his lack of being able to pass some sort of college level composition (jesus christ was that person really serious? holy shit!) that is all

It's completely unimportant. If you like those sound waves going inside your ears, everything else is irrelevant. in a certain way, you will learn to appreciate other stuff, it's obvious. No stupid academician will go "omg if you listen to X artist you'll never discover Y!!!11~". Intellectual or emotion intelligence is something that cannot be controlled by the powers-that-be, political or acamedic they may be.

In fact by learning about other types of classical composers, you will learn to identify yourself even more with the music of Philip Glass. Or perhaps less. It's all irrelevant, as long as you like those sound waves giving you music.
