There's actually an article all about this in this month's Sound on Sound!

Paul: For starters, before setting the mics up, I'll always try to take off the casing of the piano; usually the lid and the section of front panel directly above the keyboard, but also the panel above the pedals. Once...

there's that snippet on the website, sounds both scary and awesome. i'll have to look for it if i accidentally fall into a bookstore soon.

or someone should paraphrase the article and post it here

Ill type it up in paraphrase later on today. Basically everything thats been said here though. Just take off as many panels as you can to reduce knocks/creaks/bad reflections

i found that someof the nicest sound came from under neath the keyboard, taking off the front panel above the pedals. i am tutored to reduce all extra piano noise, with the pedal if you do not move your heel from the floor, and do it smoothly and controlled, that can be silent, if you hardly move your fingers/arms up from the keyboard atall, not only do you drastically increase your maximum speed bu t also you will make far less finger slapping noises. essentially when you play all you want people to hear is the notes you play, unless you are john cage or your specifically state otherwise anyway.

i had a to do a small college project on micing up grand pianos, after about 3 weeks of library research it seems that in order to get an accurate rerepresentation of a grand pianos sound, you need 8 strategically placed mics, whereas with an upright you only need two.

  • 2 weeks later...

An update: I did the recording yesterday. I am still doing the post on it. It came out a lot better than i thought it would. Not perfect but, it was the only the second recording of a piano i have done. Thanks for all the tips. They were a great help. Once the post is finished i shall post a couple of snippets.

I should have mentioned that it isn't me playing the piano. I am nowhere near that good! The problem is that i am not sure that i could really share the full tracks. They are not mine and they are only demos. I would love to but i think it would unfair to my friend. Sorry dude. :flower:
