It's not uncommon for artists to be 'salaried' in some way. An advance isn't always paid up front as one lump sum. And I'm not just talking about major labels providing an allowance to artists. I've known people on independents to be 'salaried'. Its not always a good idea to give young people with a predilection for alcohol and drugs a lump of cash.

So the question is legitimate, even if the op is taking the piss. Though I doubt any of warps recent artists have anything like this arrangement.
