takeshi
Just saw 'Mad Detective' by Johnny To & Ka-Fai Wai. The premise of the story is a little goofy but I was surprised how much I liked it. I'm becoming more of a fan of To's stuff with each movie he makes. He's done some really good crime films lately. Think Scorsese if he'd been born in China and obsessed with the Triads instead of the Mafia. I love his visual style too, you can tell he was influenced by Robert Altman's 70's era stuff. Filmed from a distance, sort of documentary style camera work, where most of the lighting seems fairly naturalistic. I love that stuff. The directing team did another good one a few years ago called 'Running on Karma'. Heh, we seem to get these threads about once a month now. If Aguirre hit the spot and you really liked Kinski, I'd go with Fitzcarraldo as your next pick. If you wanted something a bit more humane, I'd go with "The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser" or "Stroszek" Personally, I'm hugely fond of his earliest films (in black and white), "Signs of Life" and "Even Dwarves Started Small" I also liked "Heart of Glass" The ones that are more forgettable for me are Nosferatu, Woyszeck, and Cobra Verde. His documentaries are a whole other area to explore, if you like docos. I bought it a while ago cause it was in the "Kino Kontrovers"-series that Irreversible was in too. I didn't like it so much though... but given that I don't speak the original language, I've only seen a dub and I imagine conversations and speech are most important for this film, so I can't really judge. I might have a different opinion about it by now too. I remember how the scene where the boy shows her his music was sadly familiar "you're not gonna like it" - "aw come on, don't say that, just show me!" - "ok here you go" - " . . . And THAT'S what you listen to? Noo, don't like it at all." Soothsayer said: The guy is really wonderful for visuals(even The Cell, that famous horse scene, for instance) I agree that The Cell has some really amazing visuals and even some things that satisfy me as an old dream-fanatic, but then there were other aspects that were just bad. The horse-scene isn't actually an original idea. http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&...mages&gbv=2 The film should have been a lot smaller and without the Lopest, it could have been brilliant...
