I remember first seeing the Playboy scene and being very impressed that the movie didn't add some ridiculously cliche scene were the bunnies somehow got to sleep with the crew. And lo and behold, that scene was added in the redux.

I utterly agree with you here Rook. What I should have said was that I liked the reinserted Bunny scenes themselves (i.e. in isolation, of themselves) . As a part of Apocalypse Now as a whole though, they weaken the stance of the original film in the same way as the godawful French Plantation scenes do. One thing that I always loved about the film was it's rejection of lazy cliche.

if you like westerns, i'd say The Wild Bunch by Sam Peckinpah is something rather different and really nice. and then i hear China 9, Liberty 37 is pretty good too.

yeah I don't want to hijack this thread, but really the French Plantation scene showed that the war wasn't just about GIs and vietnamese, it takes you outside the realm of strictly soldiers. It brings you back to the real world (because to me war is very unreal).

The playboy bunny scene was meh sure. But the added willard scenes show his humanity still has a desire to poke through, even with all the fucked up bullshit that's happening around, and to him.

It should be public knowledge that it costs millions of $/£/Y to make a movie, so Being commercialised and popular is more important than actual aesthetics and clever writing (because it has to be to justify the money spent).

Hollywood is famous. For employing anyone with tits and being commercial, as well as making films. Anything made post 2000 will either be a desperate attempt to boost ratings, an eighth Harry Potter film to stop teens from topping themselves, something that is actually well-written, but directed by a guy who wasn't manipulative enough to be commissioned, or a decent film.

If a film is frequently talked about, it's because:

(1) IT'S GOT SNAKES ON APLANE DUDE ITS SO COOL OMGOMG SHE HAD A SNAKE ON HER TIT LOLZAMGONG

(2) DID YOU HEAR ABOUT THIS FILM ON THE NEWS? THEY STOLE IT FROM DA VINCI'S BOOK THEY ARE EVIL I WANNA WATCH IT NOW

(3) Hmm, this film is actually rather good.

Primer was made on a $7000 budget and is probably one of the ten best films in the past five years.

i've seen just one peter greenaway movie, a zed and two noughts and absolutely loved it.

definitely see greenaway's The Cook, the Thief, his Wife, and her Lover then. really great film. i haven't seen "a zed and two noughts" yet, but have been meaning to.

previously mentioned:

"irreversible" is easily the most powerful movie i have ever seen. i'm looking forward to noe's "enter the void"

"brazil" is another favorite.

decided to watch it just because of this recommendation. was slow but interesting toward the end...didnt find it "amazing."

this is not a joke, but just out of curiousity...are you jewish?

is holy mountian a film you can actually just sit down and enjoy though, or is it one of those gripping/distubring ones that keep soyu on the edge of your seat the whole way through. i genuinely have no idea what its about.

yah you can sit down and enjoy it, its the kind of shit that puts you in a fucking trance. the imagery is so captivating and beautiful and he had a huge budget to make it because it was backed by mfing john lennon...

yeah, i mean there's one or two disturbing moments but over all the thing is just a sit back and chill type of movie. the tone isn't trying to disrupt the viewer or anything, if that's what you mean. its a comfortable movie to watch and i was happy about that. i love just watching the opening sequence over and over.

holy bollocks I just watched Vertigo again. I don't understand how there isn't some sort of collectors edition with better commentary on the dvd. I mean, the film is ranked number 2 on Sight and Sound!

But oh well, classic film.

And go get the Passion of Joan of Arc, which I saw recently. Amazing.

sounds like my type of movie then. im fed up of films that are incredibly successful at changing my emotions for the worse, sometimes i just wanna sit off and watch a film you can just enjoy as a visual tale.
