I am having trouble deciding what to get.

These are the choices

ESX-1

or

ER-1 + AE-1

or

MC-303

I'm not sure if MC-303 is worth to get.

I don't have much to spend and I would love to play around with ^. If you have a better idea of what I should get let me know.

esx-1 definitely. the er-1 is fun for really simple drum patterns, but it's really limited in almost every way. esx-1, on the other hand, can do tons, especially when you load it up with samples. and it's just plain fun to muck around with.

Awesome! Thanks, what do you think about the mc-303? Theres one at a pawn shop where I live for 180.

i've never played with one of those, so i can't help you much there. it looks as though it's a stripped down version of the MC-505, which, unless you happen to be a canadian electroclash star, is pretty limited. for $180 bucks though, it could be fun to screw around with.

but if you plan on buying the ESX-1, definitely shop around because i saw a pair at guitar center for $300 each and the price on the internet is $500 which is way overpriced. lol i think i got my ER-1 for $250. i should've waited and bought an ESX-1, because the ER-1, while good for simple beats, is shit for drum and bass.

it really depends on what sound you want, what capabilities you want, and want price you're looking at. The ESX-1 is definitely the best machine, especially because it can sample. The ER-1 sounds very 80s and the snare and bass drum all sound very analog and fake. but you can mod the sounds to your whim! which is something that the MC-303 apparently lacks, looking at the wikipedia article.

and you can only store 50 patterns on the MC-303. you can store 256 on the ER-1 and probably way more on the ESX-1.

Well I looked on the guitar-center's esx-1 page and it is going for 400 like everywhere else. Ebay isn't even going any lower then that.

It doesn't have to be the Er-1, I actually rather get the es-1 since it's a sampler, and maybe get a EA-1 with it, which makes it about $400. So the question now would be, is it a better idea to get esx-1 alone or EA-1 with ES-1 combo. Anyways, you've encouraged me to get the esx-1.

if you must get a cheap Korg groovebox, get a second hand EM-1 coz it does everything and is basically an EA-1 and an ER-1 in one with a few exclusive features (I had one a few years ago and got some pleasing results).... should be able to get one quite cheap. I wouldn't bother with an MC-303 as they're really more of a high tech toy than a professional synth. MC-505's on the other hand are quite powerful and versatile. I would have an MC-505 over anything else mentioned in this thread. Another excellent groovebox is the Yamaha RM1X, which I would also buy rather than the Korgs or an MC-303 if I had the choice.

Get an Electribe sampler, whatever model you want. I had one for a few years ( I regret selling it) and it was a pretty powerful little machine. You could record automations on all of the parameters into your patterns, which can make for some real fun when messing about. Plus, it had such an intuitive interface that you could pull in samples and cut them up and grind them up with effects almost effortlessly.

Fuck the Mc-303.

I own the ES1 and EA1, but I think I'm going to lean toward the ESX (which I do not have) It's simply got more power. You can pretty much emulate most of the basic synthesis the EA1 has with the ESX keyboard parts using waveforms, plus it's got more power than the ES1 from a sampler viewpoint.

You can take a look at my Youtube videos to see the EA1 ER1 and ES1 getting good workouts and see examples of what they can do (I tweak a lot of shit)

When I worked at Guitar Center in the keyboard dept we had these black guys who were too cheap to actually buy a triton, but since they were black and read somewhere in a magazine that timbaland used one for 5 seconds of his life they thought it was the ILLEST.They would literally bring a floppy in...save their shit and come back a different day to pick up where they left off.

I hopped on the esx-1 one time and redid a couple bars from "aint nuttin but a g thang" by dr dre and rerouted the audio across the room to the same speakers the triton was hooked up to.

I'd make a blank patch set to 80bpm and cue the dr dre track to come next so i'd have time to flee the crime scene before chaos ensued and sit there and watch from behind the counter as these twats would be on their cells playing their tracks to some friend and dr dre would come in with his +6db dominance and drown out whatever they were up to. Nothing as funny as watching some retard shout "YO!....THAT'S DRE!....?" and proceed to turn the triton off in an effort to troubleshoot while dr dre rolled right along.

nah it isn't racist. I was kidding about the "because they're black" part. If it was a white guy doing that shit I would have done the same thing. I was just bagging on them for being cheap and buying in on the trend that somehow a triton is THE hip-hop machine. Now shut your fucking African Americanhole. I have a black friend!

edit: LOL this board automatically translates the N bomb into "african american"
