34% through Infinite Jest, taking into account footages etcetera. Enjoying it very much, almost addictive to keep going ironically.

Ubik was kinda meh, I didn't feel it that much. I don't even really know what was he trying to convey with it really. Also (spoilers) if you know you're living in a fake world why don't you just go fucking bonkers? Chip knows he's in a fake fabricated world but he still would rather die than steal the can of Ubik from the old guy, lol come on. "I don't have fake money in this fake dream world, I guess this is it then" lel. Also why doesn't he try to bash the dead kid's head in? The one who has invading other half-lifer's bodies. I dunno, Chip's and Al's actions and reactions just didn't make much sense to me. They don't even consider that the girl with completely world altering powers might have something to do with it until like way too late in the book.

I dunno. Just a very unsatisfying book to me

Damn I remember loving Ubik when I was younger, afraid to ever reread it now.

Authors and their books are like plates of food at a buffet table: I don't need to eat the whole plate, just have a taste. With Dick, I've had a few bits off his plate and that's enough for me.

I have had my taste of Dick, and I enjoyed it.

The only authors who I've voraciously hunted down more work is Vonnegut and Yasutaka Tsutsui. Not that there's much Tsutsui in English (read Hell if you find it, a really good fractured book, the only book I've reread a bunch of times) so it's easy to read it all.

Starting A Song of Ice and Fire for the third time. I've never gotten past book two but these days there's spoilers everywhere so this is my only chance to enjoy it before it's ruined on me.

Sudden PKD backlash in this thread lol.

Ubik is pretty cool so far but I'm only at 10% or so.

I really want someone who likes Ubik to defend the book

Just finished The Long Walk, don't know why I stayed away from King's Bachman books for so long as this completely kicked my arse. Brutal premise and dusted it off in three days, and he was only 18 when he wrote it. Talented bugger, Roadwork is up next.

Yup, Bachman is King at his most nihilistic and it's so fucking good.

Roadwork is possibly my favourite, let me know what you think.

Paprika is good, vastly different from the film but just as much a head fuck. Not read Girl Who..., the only one of his (in English) I've not read. I hear it's OK, but very dated.

Salmonella Men on Planet Porno is good too, should be able to find it pretty cheap. A collection of short stories, the title story being the best, although there's a four page fictional biography of Mozart which is entirey untrue and hilarious.

Great there's some king I haven't read - has anyone read the dark tower?

Apparently someone asked Don DeLillo if White Noise was influenced by Roadwork. And it's a totally reasonable question.

DeLillo was all "whaa" though

Never read much King, but the synopsis of Roadwork sounds like a JG Ballard novel.

lol if DD has secretly been ripping of Stephen King this whole time.

Now reading Poe's short (prose) stories, 69 (iirc) of them, dunno if that's all of them but it sure is a lot so it's OK to me. Translated to Spanish by one of our better writers, Julio Cortazar, which may even add to Poe's already beautiful prose. I've always been anti-translation cause you always lose a lot of the artistry with it, I really dislike and avoid it whenever I can, but when it's done right it can be good, or at least a different but equally enjoyable experience.

Just started the first Southern Reach book. Reminds me a bit of The Crystal World by JG Ballard and/or At The Mountains of Madness by Lovecraft. Very pleased so far.
