i can't wait to use this on my meaty keyboard!

srsly tho. fuck.

here's a question. what happens if someone samples yesterday by the beatles, but mangles the chordings and notes so much that the only thing that still sounds like the original track is the timbre and dynamics of the instruments, but no melodies and such?

can the beatles sue for that? copyright law is about to get even more fucked than before.

I could be wrong, but I thought what the video was saying was it could only detect chords if the recording was all the same instrument.

yeah it only works if you analyze recordings of instrument(s) with a consistent timbre- and duration-profile (consistent attacks/decays). looks like it does a (ST)FT and then correlates certain parts of the spectrum with other parts, and if there is a lot of correlation in timbre & duration - same timbral characteristics - it's possible to deduce that it's notes from the same instrument but with different pitch, like in melodyne 1 but much more accurate. the short examples in the video sounded really clean and artifactless and that is surprising because it is hard to clean-break a spectrum like that. not to mention the flawless timestretching. tho it might be youtube-audio-compression is masking up the artifacts.

btw that interview is fucking awesome, dude looks like he's taking his first break in years from hand-coding assembly routines in VI on his BSD rig.

btw2, PRAAT can do this same thing quite well. it is not nearly as slick, interface wise, and you will have to use it in combination with an external pitch-shfiter / time-stretcher because it's only good for the analysis-part. try looking into the cepstral analysis features: calculating the Mel frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCCs) and splitting with custom window-sizes will probably be one of the most accurate ways to get there.

Lol. I think his misses locked him in the cellar. He definitely looks like Jerry Garcia.

no no, you're making the common mistake of confusing the Old Deadhead look with the Real Programmer look

difference: tie-die shirts

common: a penchant for acid

What the fuckity fuck, TORRENT this thing ASAP.

Just imagine, taking mono source and cleaning the shit out of them for sample. Finally grabbing that guitar riff you wanted but the goddamn singer was screaming his lungs over it. Or cleaning the original Amen break once and for all!

Or just fucking up existing songs. Remix will become TEH thingor.

heheh i think you're missing the point a little, besides, how do you 'clean' the amen break anyway? that's like that thread someone started in the afx forum about 're-doing' saw85-92 because it has analog tape artifacts all over it.

More vids, here's one with it separating a trumpet solo from within a Jazz ensemble piece. Now, admittedly, the trumpet is by far the most prevalent instrument in this recording, but, there are drums and a string section along with it so it's at least possible to separate some instruments from others within a whole composition:

this is going to get nuts. like when people used time stretching and pitch shifting beyond what it was originally intended to do, to make a completely new sound. this is about to happen again, but because of all the technology available today, it will be absolutely out of this world. honestly, i'm not ready for it. i'm not ready for what is available even now, there's no way i could keep up with shit

Whoa... this is monumental!

I was just having a conversation the other day about how something like this would be absolutely impossible. Touche, Melodyne. Touche.

New ambient album "Sun and Clouds" now out.
Use the discount code watmmer for 50% off the $4 album.
Check it out.

i played around with melodyne, like GB3 I was kind of put off by it's interface.

Also I found that if you pitch shifted a note more than a few semi-tones it really really started to sound awful.

This is pretty cool however, so it will definitely be interesting to see what people do with it...
