I always wondered why he says he hates "Rock" when he makes a great song like Arched Maid Via RDJ.

or "crying in your face"

well, it was all done with a magic 303

oh, and "grumpy acid" at 1'56... no way he could've done that with tape

I think you need to go lube your equipment.

alright, man opposed to me.

whatever you need to feel to fill that empty hole you don't understand.

i don't own any "analog GEAR" though, so there's nothing to lube.

I think you need to go charge your Mac battery

Also i think you need to listen to some Metallica

hi guys I was just wondering what kind of batteries does Aphex Twin use? like does he have a personal brand preference, or does he go by whatever lasts longest, or is he really frugal and buys on sale? I'd really like to know, thanks!

I think the majority of the melodies come from analog equipment. You can tell in some tracks, listen out for gentle humming noises from the machines he's using. If I were to hazard a guess, he only used digital/computer software to manipulate and edit down some areas of the tracks > though I would not be surprised if he used some hardware for occasional sequencing.

The Analords are a great collection of consistent tracks. They came about at the right time. I think if he tried doing something of this nature back in the 90's, who knows what the results would have been.

In a Future Music interview, he was asked for a gear list and provided the following (prepare pinch of salt):

Raveolution 309, the Raven Max, MC-909 limited edition, Quasimidi Van Helden, MAM Freebass 383, Roland DJ-70, E-15, SP-808, Akai S3200, Behringer MX602A and all the Behringer effects that copy other things." When he's asked which software he uses, he says "UPIC by Xenakis puts almost everything else to shame. It's under 1mb and it shits on everyone." UPIC was a '70s experimental French system developed by Greek composer Iannis Xenakis, which is based on drawing on a graphics tablet. It's somehow connected with CCMIX, where they talk about it running on a Windows 98 system. UPIC seems to have developed into Iannix, which you can download from this page. He also talks about liking Ableton Live, but preferring LiveSlice for beat editing/stretching. He uses Etymotic Research headphones.

You can also get a reverse effect by running something into a reverb unit, keeping wet at 0% and dry at 100%, when you want a reverse effect, just hit wet to 100% and dry to 0%, and the sound "rushes up".

Also, if you're using an envelope with only attack and decay, just reverse the attack and delay and you get a nice "reversed" effect.

Also jesus christ I was joking about the digital stuff

that list is 100% bs. All the hardware he lists is inferior knock offs of the "real" stuff he's been repeatedly photographed with. He's just taking the piss out of poor people who try to copy him with inferior gear (i.e. us)

Aphex only uses the "Roland" branded batteries that came in the box with a brand new TB303 in 1982. When these run out, he throws away the 303 and has his servants bring him another 303 with Roland batteries.

stuff like that white noise album - that's ALL tape editing, every single element is a piece of tape, splice or dubbed with other pieces of tape.

i love that album.

you can do reverse edits w/ hardware.. there is a reverse sampler on the boss se70.. just set your ms delay to the tempo and whala

there is no need for richard to use plug-ins he has everything anyways.

the mc4 has i think CV-1, CV-2, Gate and MPX outs so more then enough to power some synths for a track. and he probally knows how tp rince it anyways..

not to mention the cv gates on a 101 too.. so its quite possible to do a track with just cv's

there's a post somwhere in these forums, links to something richard wrote about using analogue equipment because they can't be entirely replicated by computer-based equivalents.

You mean the DRUNKEN RANT? That was on planet mu. Quality stuff.

Also full of some factual errors, hence being a drunken rant. Plus I Think the only source that actually "confirmed" it being RDJ was Mike P's estranged wife was it not? Kinda flimsy anyhow.
