monitors

couldn't i just get a big pair of old speakers from an entertainment system for "monitoring" my choons. i'm sure their sound would be relatively flat compared to a pair of new speakers, also save me 100's of dollars...

huuh??

You could - but it's doubtful they'd sound flat. Stereo speakers are designed to make anything sound good, so certain frequencies, especially in the lower range, are boosted.

I used stereo speakers for a long time. It made all the difference when I got real monitors. They really are essential in my opinion, and should be one of the first things you buy if you're doing any serious recording.

Depends how close to them you are going to sit. If you're perching right on top of them due to space restrictions, get smaller ones.

Proper studios have both, and switch between.

To answer your question more directly: good stereo speakers are good monitors. Also, the best way to tell if a mix will sound good through your stereo, is to mix through your stereo!

actually yeah, i recall making music when i was in a big room (bedroom) and having the speakers farther away. you could really make sense of volumes and shit

i'm kind of kicking myself because there were brand new wooden speakers among other things that some house was giving away. everything free

i never grabbed them because they were too big for my desk i think

monitoring through a mini stereo system is a good idea, thanks for that. i use the stereo speakers right now through an amp but i imagine a mini stereo system would be a good idea.

just to be crystal clear: monitoring through your stereo is only good because it's your stereo. i.e. you already know how your favourite tracks sound on it. I would only monitor through a stereo if it was a)good and b)also my main tune-listening stereo

ah gotcha, so my setup is probably ok for me because i listen to my music on it, but, having proper monitors is better. ok

It's usually wise to check your mixes on every kind of speakers you have in the house, if anyone other than you is going to hear it. God forbid somebody listens to your stuff on laptop speakers, you'll want to make sure it sounds as good as it can. And when it comes to tiny mediocre speakers, it's a good way to gauge how loud some of the higher frequencies really are in comparison to the rest of the mix.

I bought the shittiest little walkman speakers at Radio Shack for this reason. It's also good to check your mixes in mono.

I got an entirely different question about monitors.

I got a pair of Yorkville monitors, YSM1p.

I absolutely love the sound but i got a problem with them.

After a while they start to generate a lot of noise, it fades in. Not too loud but a very annoyingly present white noise.

I feel it has to do something with power supply.. Actually, I'm not sure at all.

I don't think it's damaging the monitors or anything. It's just annoying that I have to reset them every time only to have them reset again after a few minutes..

Help! :P

  • 3 months later...

yeah I'm going to get some Adam A7's this week. I'm through mixing on my headphones. It's my understanding that these are the best in their price range. Any different opinions?
