I'm not sure about the Hs80ms....yamaha's ns10M are extremely popular, so yamaha have some sort of reputation for making decent monitors. I'm pretty sure that you'll find a hs80ms review on soundonsound.com. Have you looked into alesis or behringer monitors cause they seem to get some praise among amateur musicians. I own a pair of alesis m1mk2 and like them a lot, even though they've been criticized for having some sort of power problem. I don't really see a point in getting expensive monitors if you don't have a decent mixing/eq/dynamics set-up or skills. stick with cheap shit

the ns10's are a true classic that you see all over the place, but its worth noting that they seemed to be almost an accidental classic. the thing is with ns10's is that they sound awful unless your mix is great, and thats the key, you really have to work to get them to sound good, and if they sound good then your track will probably work on most systems pretty well.

I'm not sure if yamaha meant this situation to be the case, and as such I dont really trust their modern monitors that much.

It could be unfounded, they might be great, if you get a pair of ns10's and learn to mix on them then you may never buy another set of monitors again but I tend to work best on clear and nice sounding monitors that you work to get sounding better.

heres some opinions -

krk's are good and fairly cheap, bit of a wierd midrange but get to now them and they will shine

mackie 6 and 824's are nice upper mid priced monitors but they have a distinctive sound loved by dnb producers, ie good for heavy dance music

dynaudio's are great but expensive

blue sky media desks are brilliant if you set them up well and get to know them, the intergrated sub is a bounus but i sometimes crave more detail (they are my home moniors).

for low cost I think the tapco s8's are very good value for money, but they dont match up to a great pair of monitors

ns10's as i say will be your lifelong partner if you know them but are a wildcard as far as speakers are concerned

circle 5's are nice and you can really crank them up and they are still workable with

there just the ones I work with regularly, there are many more out there!

hope that helps!

i just bought new usher s-520's, and these are the first monitors i've ever owned in my life. is it always better to have these on the same exact plane as your listening (ear) level?

i'm trying to figure out optimal placement, and also mixing is still an issue because they are passive, i have to drive them to be heard which is separate from the actual line level signal being recorded to my pc. new to this so any help would be appreciated. what's the best way, with this sort of setup, no matter the audio source... to determine the optimal recording level? or is optimal subjective and therefore just do what sounds "good?"

Hey man, congrats on the purchase! Yes it best to have them level with your ears, and your head and the monitors should make an equilateral triangle if possible, thats a good starting point anyway. Heres a SOS aticle on monitor placement with everything you need....

http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/mar02/articles/monitors.asp

I'm a bit confused with the second bit, don't confuse inputs and outputs as they are separate, with your audio software in the middle!

When you say you need to drive them do you mean have them really loud to hear anything? Passive speakers need an amp as well, so if you havent got one I imagine you will have a LOT of trouble mixing! with an amp they will be as easy to mix on as active speakers (the only difference is actives have the amps built into the speaker).

on the recording side the optimum recording levels is always as loud as you can without distortion, simple as that, it needs to be loud so you are using the full scale that you have available to you to describe the audio (the bit depth). the best thing to do is play the loudest thing you will play for a particular recording, turn up the input until it distorts then back it off a little, you cant go wrong with that!

best money ever spent.. will take them to the grave

What'd you pay for the pair? I'd like to hear more about how well they perform compared to other monitors that you've used.

I'm trying to find something decent, preferably used (cost), active, with 8" drivers. I've been looking at Tannoy and Mackie among others.

so my desk can't really accommodate the depth of the monitors I want to get, has anyone had this problem and what did you do? buy stands? mount on the wall?

Yes, stands are common. I've also considered some sort of homemade shelves, fit with L brackets that I'd potentially bend to achieve an angle. Ultimately, I'll go with stands but am still in the process of finding something suitable.

You might find some ideas here: http://www.gearslutz.com/board/low-end-the...y-monitors.html - do check out that entire forum if you've the time.

Have any of you tried the Tascam VL-A8's?
