I've recently torrented 4 cds of Richard Devine, and I find he is quite similar to autechre's noisy clicky type of sound, particularly the gantz graf ep and other similar works.

he has alot of very terrifying ambient stuff, and some pretty sick beats too.

Anybody else into this guy?

on a purely emotional level he doesnt do it for me like autechre has in the past, but on a technical and make your brian melt getting stoned music type of way hes quite amazing. ive been waiting patiently for his planned 5.1 album but its been at least 3 years since he announced it. wish he would release more music

edit: if you havent already check out some of his live soundboard recordings, they have a lot of unreleased and extended versions of his tracks

i dont think i'll get that far into his music but its definately a pleasant listen to have on while browsing watmm and the like.

i've listened to lipswitch all the way through i'm almost finished aleamapper, the latter having much more ambience which is pretty cool.

DEFINATELY gotta bring a bunch of his shit along on my next shroom trip, he does some crazy things with sound that you can only really pick up on headphones

Asect:Dsect is a dope album, the rest is kind of hit or miss. Def sounds like Autechre in places, if I recall correctly he even sampled a couple Chiastic Slide tracks back in the day for a Schematic comp.

If Autechre is on one side, and Venetian Snares on another, Richard Devine would be in the middle and in a more dancey copycat dsp wankery sort of place.

I lump him in with recent Jega, eight frozen modules, and phthalocyanine, all of which need to put out some new shit.

FWIW - 8FM's "Abduction of Barry" straight kills it.

at one point i saw him as just (badly) copying autechre, but then in the last three or four years i've really grown to appreciate him ... i think if one were to try to figure out who's carrying the electronic music standard, as it were, it would be devine, chris clark, or bistream; and of those, probably devine.

also i'd say (versus robbie/g3) that devine often gets there on an emotional level; "lens, align" (from lipswitch) literally gets me choked up, it's one of the saddest songs i've ever heard. though keep in mind i'm a little insane, probably. but also tracks like "float 82" (from aleamapper) or "timach" (from cautella), or "corina chirac" and "amber's prelude" (from asect:dsect); these have as much of an emotional impact as "vletrmx21" or "drane".

but overall you get the sense that there's some sort of brilliant computer-related alien malevolence churning out icy perfectly-programmed electronic music; even on his more 'emotional' tracks it's ICY, there isn't any warmth or 'fuzziness' or 'humanity', but very clean and clear and crisp, somehow melancholy. as if an MAX/MSP patch somehow took psychedelics and became self-aware, or whatever.

also, just for the record; "arcacid" is the most badass electronic music track ever created ... i've played this (on the sigstop 12") at maximum volume i don't know how many times.

I like his beats a lot, it can be a bit too much sometimes. But it's danceable and complex at the same time and I like that.

i like his stuff, i think lipswitch is probably his best, but asec:dsect isn't far behind. cautella has some nice tunes on it aswell. he definatley has the chops so i hope to get more material from him, more in the vein of the live shit he's been doing. or maybe something completley different.

isnt he doing acid now too

unfortunately yes, he has jumped the sad-wagon. i think he should still be pushing his too dense for your brain to process beat music, there is alot more territory to cover there and he does it better than most other people.
