Guest dild0
Squee said: Quote VENICE, Italy (AP) — Darren Aronofsky's "The Wrestler" has won the top award at the Venice Film Festival. The film awarded the Golden Lion on Saturday stars Mickey Rourke as a wrestler forced into retirement who strikes up a romance with an aging stripper played by Marisa Tomei. Hmmm... so this means that... it might just be a good movie? Hm? it really should be,in the jury there were some relevant people like Wenders,Miyazaki etc. wtf,Rourke was so gross with that tie.. Guest abracadabra
Saw this last night. Great film. Recommended. It's less 'visualizing' than Aronofsky's other films. That's not to say that The Wrestler isn't visualizing. Just less effects and special editing and such. Mickey Rourke does an awesome fucking job in this film. Very touching. Some really funny parts to uplift the mood. Marisa Tomei is HOOOOOOOTTTTT, I caught a boner, srsly. Go see it. edit: and possibly gets my best movie of 2008 vote Edited December 20, 2008 by abracadabra Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/35814-the-wrestler/page/2/#findComment-903036 Share on other sites

Rubin Farr
watched the DVD screener tonight, not sure what to think. i liked Marisa Tomei, and Rourke's believability was painfully clear. the whole daughter thing was badly acted, and the 3 unresolved plotlines threw me for a loop until i realized it was intentional, kinda like the ambiguity of the ending to The Fountain. I actually think pi's a refreshing watch now and again because it's basically void of all hollywood bullshit (ie. love interest). FLA FUR BIS FLE
watched it. very good. setting (I know it's Jersey) is uncomfortably like Western New York in spots. I once ended up at one of those amateur wrestling gigs due to it being held in a local run down shopping mall. It was probably the most uncomfortable situation I've ever been in. Bob Dylan
The ending made perfect sense. You knew that slowmo shot was coming, because it was the only way to end the movie. In fact I really know he worked hard on "when" the Boss would start his song, like the exact frame it needed to start. The guy only lived for the ring, nothing else. It seemed such a perfectly realised part that he played for someone who was so great 20 years ago and now is essentially worthless - I have absolutely no interest in wrestling and never have (except for a brief spell in August '92 for some reason) which is why it's even more surprising that the film gripped me so much. Surely it was more of a film about a broken character struggling to get to grips with regaining a normal life than about wrestling. - By being dissatisfied about the resolution you mean the fact that it wasn't resolved ? Well to be honest that would be exactly how things would've gone. You've got a father who has ignored you for practically all your life, you give him one chance to resolve things and he blows it, you're not gonna want to stick with him getting continually hurt and disappointed when you can do what you've always done and got on with your life. - Closure in the conventional sense really would've robbed the film, so for me the semi-ambiguous ending (does he die, has he finally made a come back, has all of his family and friends left him) seems like a far more dramatic ending than if it was all spelt out for you like most films. Great use of sound two building up the Clint Mansell post-rock and the crowd chanting to the sudden black screen and reverberation down to silence. EDIT: Hmm, looks like assegai has written exactly the same thing !
