Squarepusher live

Recommended Posts

Am I the only person who doesn't like Squarepusher's live approach? I've seen him a few times now.

He basically just does karaoke on the bass. He plays tracks on a laptop, exactly as they would sound off whatever CD they're off, and plays bass on top (correct me if I'm wrong, but the original bass lines often don't even seem to be removed.)

I have seen variations to this, where he's done something a bit more magical on the bass alone (where it's triggering things and whatnot) or where he's doing something even less magical (just playing back a track and adding effects on top while bobbing his head like he's possessed), but his main approach is boring.

Sure, lots of electronic musicians (yes, he's also a jazz musician, but I'm talking about his electronic stuff) just play tracks off a laptop, so I guess I should be thankful he plays along on his bass. But it'd be nice if he controlled the music in a more substantial way, somehow. I have seen it done by other electronic acts, and he of all people should try something a bit more daring.

IMO.

i see your point when you look at this:

BUT, there's no other way he could play his tunes live! really... i can't think of anything he could do to "control his music in a more substancial way", besides triggering some effects on a reaktor patch, moving some knobs in his orville (?), and playing lightning fast basslines along with the music, wich is great!

also, everything is done by himself, production, mixing, composing (obviously), etc. i think one of the reasons he stuck to electronic music is to move away from playing with a band :undecided:

man i hate that video so much.

watching someone as ultra godlike as squarepusher performing such a shit song really turns my stomach.

its like watching de niro in showtime.

Its still 10x better than anything i could ever do but its just very sad to see such a genius working at about 5% of his potential. I'm gonna go now and listen to Tetra Sync on repeat all day and pretend that everything is still ok.

I saw him live with evans parker in london last year and it was the most amazing thing i've ever seen and heard on a stage so i know he isnt completely mental yet. Spectaclom sounds very promising too :)

ive seen him live and i know what youre talking about, it is kinda boring. i guess your ticket price is mainly to hear it on a pa system, what i dont understand is that wasnt squarepusher's marketing angle at one point in the past the fact that he plays a bass really fast, like 180 bpms?

at least thats what you tell your non electronic music friends.

anyway playing bass over a bassline is pretty homo, check out that live video of him playing beep street on youtube - coooommmmmeeee on mannn, at least kill that set with playing one part of the song live, he does that bass slap improv crap on top of the original bassline. audience still goes ape shit just because the whole experience was new but come on!

In the last two videos posted here he's literally done nothing to those tracks (I listen to 'Go Plastic' a lot...) Well, in the DYKS clip he did a tiny bit of effecting/slowing down on top at one point...

Meh. I think it'd be interesting if he played with some other folk, or at least did more live triggering stuff.

Live Liquid room 1996

Live at RoppongiTokyo - ultravisitior tour

Live at lille 1996

alive japan vs Frigids.......

Phoenix tracks especially dimontane co

all excellent examples of TJ doing the live thing as best he can.

Bangface was pretty damn good live as well. 6 new tracks with great bass playing. I trust the composer to give us what he wants AND you can't deny his energy. Thats what i get from electronic gigs whther its Vsnares cd mixng, aphex's dj skills or TJ playing bass or autechre setting up their sequences.

those vids are the ones i was referring to, he doesnt change the tracks at all and doesnt even play the basslines, he just slaps his bass over the top. impressive at first glance but very premature ejaculation, masterbation penis sweat from my balls. sorry left over thoughts from the last two threads i posted in tonight.

I don't really care what he did in 1996.

And he's been playing loads of new material.
