(how to) make some noise

Recommended Posts

it's not lying, it's saying something as if it's true without knowing if it's true (is there a word for that?)

No synths at all.

you are full of lies.

That was later on, and real purist Industrial fags will tell you it stopped being industrial then. Other purist Industrial fags will tell you it STARTED becoming industrial then. Still others will claim that....

Really just fuck Industrial because nobody can even agree what it is or isn't. You basically have to infer through context clues which Industrial people are talking about.

all sounds like it's true, but is it?

well cats doesn't even like TG, and most later industrial like wumpscut and such used MS-20's and all that fun stuff. I dunno. Lots of effects is a major key for noise though.

CATS, just learn to build your own fuzz pedals, and buy random distortion pedals and such.

yeah that picture is amazing.

Wumpscut would fall under the German man named Dieter with a handfull of pills and a bottle of astroglide subset in my mind.

how could you say industrial music, and then say NO SYNTHS? that's practically a fucking oxymoron, you are a fool. Pretty much all the staples of industrial I know extensively (often almost exclusively) use synths. Of course when it comes to that, if you want to use what they used, you're looking for some crazy possibly expensive vintage gear. ( the Ms-20 is a popular one, not only is it great for industrial, but every one from Aphex to Mr. Oizo uses it) Merzbow and many others use EMS synthi etc.

There's a bigger problem than just excluding synths though, making noise is a VERY broad term, and there are tons of subgenres and styles that can fit into the term. Saying "make noise" is almost as bad as "I want good timbre" , be more fucking specific. What artist's style are you looking for? Are we talking Whitehouse harsh noise? Gereogegege Screaming? Stock Hausen Bloops? Subotnik Bleeps? Concrete sampled sounds? Plunderphonics? feed back? screeches?

LOL, Mr. Butthurt called Whitehouse harsh noise.

Fuck knows about the wine thing, don't do that. Set the git on fire and throw it through some windows.

The best noisemaker I ever had, and still do have come to think of it (which I do), is my Boss PS2 pitch shifter / delay pedal. I bought it when I got my BassStation rack (back when it was first released) and it was the only outboard effect I had for ages, so I got to know it really well. It's a digital delay, so it can hold a sound for as long as you like. Very easy to crank up the feedback and get your everyday cacophony, but over time I learned to play that thing like an instrument - switching from delay to pitch shift and back again, using the pedal to get rhythms going (it has two seconds of memory as I recall), working the sweet spot of the feedback knob so that the sound fell away slightly and then rushed back with a slightly modified timbre... the range of the pedal was excellent and with judicious use of the pitch shifter you could work any old sound into a squealing staccato loop or an almost analogue-sounding low burble.

I want to dig it out again now, I think I got more creative with that pedal than most of the synths I've owned.

as a fellow PS2 owner i agree entirely with this post, except that my love for that pedal was outdone by my love for the yamaha dds20m

You don't need a good mixer to make a feedback loop. And if you do decide to go the mixer + feedback loop route, don't get a Behringer mixer or any kind of death metal pedal, that sound is so ubiquitous it's not even funny.

I wouldn't advise that route though.

but people love it so much! it's great!! :P

There's only a few people who actually do anything interesting with that style of noise. There's too many people that sound exactly like one another nowadays because they're going for that one "noise" sound, which is ridiculous, because there isn't one.

I dunno, I'm just a noise snob I guess.
