I think it would have been tolerable if the vocals had been more subtle, and if she had not sacrificed pitch for style.  I think the concept was probably challenging in the first place, and she was probably doomed to failure in the view of BoC fans before she even started.

What I think is worse by far is that press releases leading up to the album's release stated she was "sampling" BoC, and this is a little more than just a sample, if you ask me.

I wonder if Michael and Marcus KNEW she would foul it up.

Sibling riding on success of untalented big sister, it was doomed from the start.

Okay, I suppose that was stupid of me.

this sucks. i'm just going to pretend that it doesn't exist.

edit: and this could've turned out nicely, if maybe solange tried some experimentation with her voice instead of the same tired ass r&b stuff.

edit2: oh god i just listened to the last minute. this has been upgraded from murder suicide to massacre.

why.

WHY.

what fucking idiot producer thought it was a good idea to have her sing in the wrong key, and then the record company ok'ed it and released it? btw it was next to the checkout in electronics at Walmart. where it belongs.

WRONG

PREACH IT, FREDD-E!

At best, I don't think it will be a single or a radio hit.  Making music would be pointless after that, and I would probably kill myself.

regardless of how good or bad the solage track is (and to those of you who keep saying it's out of tune, your ears are painted on)..

suddnly a million beyonce and secondarily solange fans are going to see the words "boards of canada" on one of their stupid r and b records.

instant royalties for boc.

clever marketing move.

bad art.

Cleverer still, BoC fans will dog this track until she's dead.

let's be honest, 95% of the people who hear that song are never going to know who made the 'background music'.

You're assuming they could read in the first place.

I think I figured it out:  I know she isn't trying to sing in a different key, but I think the tone she uses makes it sound "off".  That aside, I'm sure any listener of BoC isn't used to hearing vocals (much less, highly stylized R&B vocals) without a vocoder or some distortion.  I still find it annoying that she used that guitar tail at the end as well, though.  That practically screams ego.

what she's actually doing is an approximation of modal harmony. basically she's picking the fifth of the key/scale of the track (probably the fifth, anyway, i'm not analyzing that lol) and basing a scale off it, and placing the melody mostly in that scale.

it's actually quite a cool technique when it's done well, which is usually in jazz. although the bocfan outrage is amusing lol.

Okay, I listened to it (again) and you're right, it's probably an attempt at a Lydian scale, since that scale seems the most likely, but when she does those stupid little "scoops" her voice drifts flat.  Any other time, she sounds okay, but when she gets loud or "creative," her pitch suffers for it.  I think it might have been a drawback to using a quieter track, since STBD is subtle anyway.

She should have just included "One Very Important Thought" at the very end, unaltered.

Hell, it should have been TCH in it's entirety, with her singing for five minutes.
