portable sequencers

get one of the sequencing software packages for the new palm pilot models... there's a number of them, obviously they don't have midi ability but they are probablby more than good enough to write down ideas with ( as some of them look quite detailed)

of course you could get nanoloop for gameboy, there's two versions, one is more oldschooled and easier to use, unfortunatley i bought the more complicated one, version 2.0

i think something better than nanoloop for you would be lsdj for the gb because it's a tracker and you seem to be into trackers if i remember well enough....

you could check out the Roland SP-404 - it's like i mini MPC, it is a sampler, but has a sequencer built in, is small(ish) and can be run on batteries.

I found this one http://www.chocopoolp.com/ It has sampling capabilities and midi import/export, so it might be something that i'll look into if I can't get a pma or qy for a decent price.

"How are the homebrew sequencers on the portable gaming devices shaping up? (psp & gameboy ds?)"

I looked at psp rhythm and it doesn't look bad. That korg ds thing is also coming out this year in the states, but i haven't actually seen what the sequencer looks like.

psp - pspseq & psp rhythm are both decent.

agree.

PSPseq with the whole probability thing was a new experience for me.

Nitrotracker on DS is kind of fun too.

MY friend has an Iphone showed me some music apps for that now that are decent. Apparently you can run them all on the ipod touch as well. showed me a sequencer with some presets by richard devine, also there are tone generators and spectrum analyzers for it. I curious to see what other homebrew is coming to those mobile mac products. hopefully, a milkytracker port..

I have Bhajis Loops and Microbe, both work really well. I've actually composed a few really great things in Bhajis Loops, though sadly I used my Palm Pilot in the rain once, and it died... =/

I'm leaning towards bahjis loops too. What palm pilot model did you use and how well did it run the software?

Palm Tungsten T5.

It ran very well, you could have at least 15 voices going at once without any lag. According to the forums the T5 can handle up to 19 voice polyphony:

http://www.bhajis-garden.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=504

I actually have a song on my MySpace that was sequenced using Bhajis Loops (http://www.myspace.com/terrestrialcouncil , the song "PCWCM"), which I then exported to MIDI and put in Ableton Live.

Really in my time using it I never reached the limitation, some people have made some really intense stuff on there, it's quite exciting. I want to actually find another Tungsten T5 so I can get back to it, it was amazing when you had an idea that you wanted to work on later...

all i probably need is 9 voices, so I could probably get a t3. Does anyone have any experience using trackers (milkytracker, sunvox, PsyTexx,) on either palms or pocketPCs? is it tedious or fun? Also, has anyone ever used Griff or AudioBox?

are there any portable sequencers out there besides the yamaha qy series and the roland pma-5?

MPC500

The PSP, Nintendo DS, ipod touch/iphone have the advantage of being smaller form factor, but to me the disadvantage is that they don't have MIDI ports to interface with other hardware, which would make it much more fun especially for live use. The DS and iphone route could interface with a laptop via wifi MIDI but to me that defeats the purpose of a portable sequencer. It is possible to add a MIDI port to the DS but it will quite a hassle to do so and even then, I don't think any of the programs would work with it. As far as I know, Nitrotracker only works with wifi MIDI. I don't understand why none of these apps implement midi in/out at least via the usb ports because then perhaps you could still use an adapter to use other non-laptop hardware.

i ended up getting a used tungsten t3 and downloading the sunvox demo and bahjis loops demo. I ended up deleting sunvox cause it was buggy and the interface didn't work well on the palm. Bahjis loops, on the other hand, is a excellent piece of software. the chord input and snap to scale features make writing tunes on the palm more efficient and less frustrating. It's just a shame that there isn't a way for the the user to create custom scales.

Guest Glass Plate

lsdj or little gpx for twice as many voices.

I've seen LSDJ been modified to control other devices (even motor controlled devices that would strike glass bowls or something like that)

LGPX is really good runs on the GPX gamer thing, and has 8 voices of LSDJ pretty bad ass.
