shut up you wanks. this really is a different approach as opposed to an mpc or software program

it's kinda punk too, err garage rock, limiting but the limits it has can make for interesting outcomes..

i just kinda wanted to know how many channels it was, i think 6. expand your mind brothas

i prefer tape 4tracks to digi. its just a matter of personal preference because i started with 4track tape recorders. i like the hiss. i like how you can flipthe tape over and record backwards parts, i like pause buttons. i like how the muddier sound disguises how shit soem of the music is. i like tapes. i like tape inlays. get a 3nd hand tascam 424 mk 2

this week ive been reunited with the tascam 4 track, juno 6 and a Korg MonoPoly that i havent touched for 10 years. its a pretty emo time or me

i saw a tascam 488 mkII on ebay... it has like 8 tracks

the one you mentioned only has 4 tracks... does that mean only 4 instruments?

4 tracks means the recording head reads the tape in 4 tracks (2 on each side of the cassette) so a maximum of 4 parts can be recorded at once . however 2 or 3 recorded channels can be bounced down on to the 1 remaining track thus freeing up another 2 or 3 . this process can be extended on ad infinitum probably, but at the expense of sound deterioration from each generation copy. also the 4 track inputs (+2) non specific inputs can all be mapped to record onto the same channel or same 2 stereo channels. so you can really record 6 things at once even though you only have 4 tracks of tape

the tascam you memntioned is i believe an 8 track... so see above but with twice the number of available tracks.

i have an 8 track digital fostex multitrack - had a couple of multitracks now and much much prefer using them to recording on a computer. much better sound quality too imo. really nice way to work - record your drums into a track, bassline into another then lead synth and so on, then when you run out of tracks, bounce them all down to a stereo track with effects and eq and start building up the sounds again on the freed up tracks!

That's surely bunkem though, unless your soundcard is particularly rubbish. Especially as that Tascam 8-track is limited to 44.1/16bits

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.

maybe on paper, a good soundcard will have superior sampling resolution or whatever, but I've used both computers and hardware recorders and i know what i prefer....computer recordings always sound like computer recordings - a bit thin maybe - anything recorded on actual hardware usually sounds warmer and fuller...whether it's a digital recorder, tape or some other kind, hardware always sounds best to me.

I dunno, they just do - probably something to do with the digital recorder being designed solely for that one purpose - all the circuitry and processors are configured to do just that one job... In a computer, they are designed and configured to do lots of different tasks... I don't want to get in argument about it, just what i have found in my experience.... If you like using software and computers, great. Me, i prefer hardware and think it sounds better.

it is entirely plausible

certain tracks of mine would sound awful had i recorded them on computer

but they sound brilliant (to me) recorded on tape (even though the recording quality, dynamic range, noise interfererence is much worse)

but then i suppose it would be virtually impossible to have made that stuff on a computer anyway

yeah, i love tape too - thought about getting a cheap 4 track for a bit of recording variation for a while - i love tape hiss! i also love the fact that tapes have screws in them. brilliant.
