His live sets when Go Plastic came out were purposely awkward and almost offensive to the listener, now this albums been released hes doing some of the best acid sets hes done in years. If he remade HMD, Go Plastic or Music is Rotted One Note again the forum would be awash with complaints of stagnancy. I really like the album after a couple of listens, but whats that mean to the global economy.

Hey, maybe you'll like it next week after 10 or more listens

but maybe thats not possible if it really is just random noodling like i think it might be

i really think there's a lot of melody on this album, though, guys. it's more melodically interesting than the somewhat "Squarepusher by numbers" constantly-modulating thing he did all over Hello Everything, for example.

take Glass Road. while the drumming and the drum sounds grate on me a little bit by that point in the album, there are definitely several distinct sections of (to me) really interesting chord progressions and memorable melodies (they sound a lot like Zappa to me).

the bit in Quadrature where the guitar and bass play little interlocking descending figures together that then modulate up is also really cool.

i mean it's cool if you dislike this album, but to say it lacks melody is wrong, as far as i can tell. to me this is probably the most melodically-focused Squarepusher album.

also, lol @ "THE best acid"

he makes some fucking wicked 303 patterns, and approaches the genre in a sort of innovative, entertaining way. well... not the acid tracks on his 1st releases, like chaos a.d., but from selection sixteen onwards it gets better . those unreleased tracks played by afx & cylob sounds amazing too.

schizm track 2 on anti greylord / selection 16 is definitely some of the best acid ever made so yeah basically

also Just a Souvenir is fucking brilliant from start to finish...

tensor in green FTW

will I like it ?

i dunno. only last night i was severely slagging it off to a mate based on the bleep samples

but the story about the daydream made a lot of sense

so i it off slsk today and have played it on headphones 4 times in a row

fredd-e hooked me up with this and he was all excited like a kid, i put the first track on and thought, yo this could be yellow magic orchestra and i was quite stoked, THE REST OF THE ALBUM IS SHIT

tom you are fucking running out of ideas, you old cunt. stop trying to badly recapture the old ways you cant fucking do it, all your bass noodling sounds the fucking same as do your melodies these days.

FUCK YOU

You're always funny when you're angry! Keep going, man!

I sure hope Tom is enjoying the controversy, if indeed there is any outside of the bubble universe that is WATMM. So, I've listened to it four times through and I like it more each time. It's definitely a lot deeper than my first impression, which was that it sounded like Yes being covered by Rage Against the Machine. I put it on last night at work and my boss, who is as vehemently anti-electronica as one can be, was whistling melodies from the tracks (which some say don't exist) after just one listen.

Love it or hate it, this album is a sincere effort and you shouldn't begrudge a man for exploring his passions.

*faps*

This is a hate topic!

There should be no hate topics that don't envolve good argument.

I saw no good argument as to why the new album would suck.

www.petergaber.com is where I keep my paintings. I used to have a kinky tumblr, but it exploded.

OK, from a fairly unbiased opinion:

track 1: quite funky, happy, simple. 4/10

track 2: bit weird, different, enjoy the sounds as much as the first but it doesn't go anywhere.3/10

track 3: Actually quite enjoyed this one. Didn't amount to anything like the first 2 tracks but nice guitar and sound. 5/10

track 4: Quite weird, didn't enjoy this.. it's much like the old 80's BBC technology programs featuring old ataris and so on.

track 5: Enjoyed this, nice bit of fast rock.. 5/10

track 6: Enjoyed this too.. Really nice sound design. Sadly doesn't go anywhere again. 5/10

track 7: Enjoyed starting but went down hill from there. 3/10

track 8: Boring, didn't enjoy this.. again, didn't go anywhere. 1/10

track 9: same as above, boring, went nowhere. 1/10

track 10: Liked this one better than the last two.. did go somewhere, nice and different.. 3/10

track 11: Good sound design. nothing happened. 3/10

track 12: Awful. 0/10

track 13: Enjoyed. Doesn't go anywhere, nice sound and feel. 4/10

track 14: No comment. 0/10

Guest hahathhat

it's hard to explain my reaction to this album. i guess it's really akin to how i react one of raphael's paintings. it looks like a photograph, but it's painted. just as you start to get your head around the fact that someone fucking painted this shit, you realize it's more than a photograph, because it was consciously created by an artist thinking about where a mere photo would fail.

Ok Why I dont like this album

I like squarepusher to be squarepusher and that is not a pretend rock band, there is enough guitar sounding acts in the world I always loved Squarepushers programming and melodys, but all this album sounds like is a rehash of other peoples music, so as a fan i am let down...

Someone mentioned that if Tom is reading this he wont change his music, no one here really expects he would by reading complaints... I am just one fan who is not helping him have a meal this time...i love all my SP releases and have since I heard a demo of Feed me back in the day.

i really agree with you but i guess the difference between us is i'll still pay

if i had been a fan between hard normal daddy and go plastic i'd've put up with the non-drill stuff just so there could be more drill

if this is a response to my last post in this thread - the one just before your post - then i'd say i'm not suggesting he literally does something so obviously like 'go plastic' again, it's just that i think his talent is more successfully applied to one knowledge placed into another genre. sure, it works as genres clashing, but for the most part the recordings have become not so much a clash as a jazz artists output created using equipment to compensate for the lack of other band members. i like the electronica stuff in it's various guises - i think he has and could still push this stuff much more.

this sounds like an airplane landing on a minefield

After a shit load of listens I'm well on this new album............really love it.

Its defo a coherent album... i think its's got a narative and that dream crap shows it..... whatever the inspiration it has great melodies and momentum. Hey Toms a bit nutty.......big deal.

(I do love his unreleased acid techno more however... from the bangface/breezeblock/electric ballroom sets)..... but thats live stuff.. this is album material and its really great. The melodies get into your head, the energy of the distortion and the breaks all work great.

"Tensor in green" is gonna be killer live track in december.. i hope. Real head banging stuff.

I PREDICT A BREEZEBLOCK 08 SESSION with the unreleased stuff getting a proper airing. then we'll have the best of squarepusher this autumn... just like he does all the time.
